This article was updated by Andrea Trama on April 11, 2026, citing the game's availability in Canada and other regions, and other new details. It was first published on April 9.
A new one Borderlands the game just shadow dropped, but it is only available on iOS. The final main title in the iconic looter shooter series hasn't been out for a full year yet, but fans have still been treated to a surprising new entry, albeit on a smaller scale than previous games. Without so much as a teaser, Borderlands now has its first mobile game.
Things have gone up and down too Borderlands franchise lately. After some pre-release controversy but a largely successful launch, Borderlands 4 lost 93% of its Steam players in just two months. Since then, Gearbox has rolled out several patches, a new vault hunter, and a promise to keep adding and optimizing the game to bring it to a higher standard as time goes on. It turns out that the series is getting something more than just additional Borderlands 4 content this year as well, although the latest release is probably not what anyone expected.
Many Borderlands 4 players are not happy with the new expansion
Borderlands 4's Story Pack 1 DLC isn't winning over many fans, with the majority criticizing the expansion's lack of content for its price.
Borderlands Mobile is available now on iOS
On April 9, fans noticed Borderlands Mobile had appeared on the Apple App Store, with no announcement from Gearbox or Take-Two. According to the store page, the app was developed by Zynga, the mobile game company Take-Two acquired for $12.7 billion back in 2022, and provides Borderlands' “signature chaos, art style and weapon throwing” to players' phones. The gameplay largely follows the classic one Borderlands formula, just with shorter missions and smaller battles, although there are still plenty of enemies to shoot and loot to collect. It's only available on iOS at the moment, and it's unclear if it'll come to Android, and it's also free, which is worth noting after Borderlands 4s price controversy.
Based on recent information, Borderlands Mobile is a limited-time test, and it will launch with a different name for other users and platforms in the future. Currently, the game appears to only be available on iOS and in the US, excluding Canada and other regions. Since this is a test, and since the only available character is the Siren, you are warned that your progress may be erased.
While the game may not live up to its predecessor, some have pointed it out Borderlands Mobile feels more complete content than the last main game, with seven game modes already available and plenty of additional content coming soon. Only one class of Vault Hunter, Summoner, is available at the moment, but three more, labeled Exo-Tank, Outrider, and Assassin, will be added in the future. As you'd expect from a free-to-play mobile game, there will also be a battle pass, although it's unclear how much this will cost and what it might entail.
Despite the lack of fanfare surrounding the launch, Borderlands Mobile feels like it's trying to appeal to longtime fans. It's full of classic enemies like skags and bandits and even bosses. It also celebrates one of Borderlands 3s best side quest by bringing back the Slaughter Circles. Only time will tell how successful it proves to be, as the app is still so new that it doesn't have enough reviews to give it an average rating, but there seems to be a lot there for players to enjoy, especially for a free experience.

A mobile spin-off might not be exactly what Borderlands fans had expected, but it may turn out to be a pleasant surprise. Other video game franchises such as Pokémon and Call of Duty has successfully broken into the mobile space, so there's a chance Take-Two's marauders could do the same. Of course, it's impossible to say for sure until more people dive into the game and Zynga adds more of its promised content. If nothing else, the app can provide something to tide fans over until Borderlands 4 get more DLC and optimizations.
