2025 could be described as the year of friendlies, with releases such as PEAK, REPOand Motorhome still there find their own niche within the larger co-op genre. Still, there are enduring co-op games that Phasmophobia and Sea of Thieves which could rightly also be called friendslop. It remains to be seen if 2026 lives up to such delightful titles, but a brand new one Steam the title announced today may come for their crowns. Die Die Die is an interesting co-op horror game for 1-6 players where pirates rob tombs.
Playable solo or with 5 friends (6 players total) on Steam, Die Die Die sees all its players step into the shoes of stylized, bean-like pirates not unlike the character models of REPO. Players will need to work together to protect themselves and obtain loot from chests and crypts, not unlike a typical ghost hunt in Phasmophobia. But above all, it is difficult to deny the connection to Sea of Thieves when the players' cursed flying ships feel so much like that game's ships.
Once players arrive at the graveyard, they are tasked with finding different types of loot via crypts and chests, thanks to various equippable items such as shovels, crowbars and guns. These lootable locations include valuables, boosters such as speed boosts and the ability to super jump, expansive trap rooms, or a lurking monster ready to attack the player. However, every graveyard is haunted by all kinds of supernatural creatures. Monsters not only hear every sound uttered by the players, but the UFOs can also attack and abduct the player. At the end of a run, players return to their pirate ship, can play various games of chance in the hold, and get game boosters from vending machines.

Like any good game Sea of Thieves or REPOa lot of the fun comes from playing with friends. Sea of Thieves, REPOand soon Die Die Die is about giving players a chaotic platform to engage in various friendship-oriented activities. As such, fans can expect “emerging mayhem, betrayal, and unforgettable cooperative moments,” according to developer Alice Games. Perhaps most interesting is the phrase “treason”.
Alice Games could simply mean that friends fail to save each other or leave them to various graveyard monstrosities, as it has yet to reveal any Among us-style social deduction elements in the game, but it would be another fun addition to this game in the growing friendship genre. In many ways, Among us could be considered a herald of the friendslop genre, but with all eyes on 2026 it will be interesting to see if Die Die Die hits the mark and what else follows this growing, popular trend.
