Multiplayer games where you can do nothing and still get rewarded

Usually, in video games, you have to earn rewards by putting in some effort. Some games even require you to grind a little to get what you want. The general belief is that if you put in a lot of effort and get a nice reward at the end, it feels extra special.

However, some people are lazy and would rather be rewarded for doing very little. And there are some multiplayer games that allow them to do just that. Here are several examples.

Dead or Alive 4

Get an achievement for losing a lot

Being an Xbox game, Dead or Alive 4 has a bunch of achievements that you can unlock. One of them is called 20 straight losses in DOA Online. Just from the name, it's pretty clear what you have to do to get this achievement: you simply have to lose 20 online matches in a row.

This is also a fighting game, meaning all you have to do is load into the game and let your opponent beat you until they win. Do this 20 times and you will get this achievement. It's not worth any Gamerscore, but it's important to get for anyone who's completed the game.

Gang Beats

Let everyone eliminate themselves

A group of players fight on top of a train in Gang Beasts.

Gang Beasts is a multiplayer fighting game where your fighters are intentionally difficult to control. This is because the physics are crazy, so you wobble all over the place, whether you're walking or fighting. Therefore, in many stages it is easy to accidentally fall outside the boundaries, especially when you are trying to eliminate someone else.

The safest thing to do is often to just stand still, as the other players will likely all eliminate each other, meaning you are the last person standing, also known as the winner. It doesn't work all the time, but it's a pretty reliable method on scenes where it's easy to fall out of frame.

Gauntlet

Wait for the exit to come to you

Four player Guantlet game.

Gauntlet is a classic dungeon crawler from the 80s. In each level you and your friends have to go through mazes, fight enemies and leave through the exit.

But if you're too lazy for any of that, you can just wait instead. If you stand still for 200 seconds in any level, all the walls become exits, meaning you can just beat the level without having to go through all the horror. It's not as fun to play this way, but it means you can progress more easily.

SpyParty

Let your opponent waste his bullet

Aiming at people at a party in SpyParty.

SpyParty is a one-on-one multiplayer game. A player tries to blend in at a cocktail party while completing tasks. The other player must figure out which of the guests their opponent is and then take them out with a sniper.

If you are a guest at the party, it is possible to win by not actually doing any of the tasks you have set. This is because the sniper only has a single bullet. If they shoot at someone other than you or just miss, you win the game. It's a risky method though, because if time runs out before your tasks are completed or a bullet is fired, the sniper wins.

The Mario Party series

Win mini-games by doing nothing

Wario, Luigi, Yoshi and Peach at the start of the Mushroom Mix-Up from the original Mario Party.

INMario Party series, there are many brilliant mini-games. To win any of them you have to be the last player standing. Sometimes you can achieve this by simply standing still and letting everyone else perish. This is the case with Mario Party 2's Bumper Balls game, where everyone rolls around on a small platform and bumps into each other. It's very easy to roll off or get suspended, so sticking around can often be the way to win. This is just one of many minigames in the series where a strategy like this works.

Split Fiction

Let your partner do the work

Zoe and Mio stare at the simulation in Split Fiction.

Throughout the co-op game Split Fiction, each player controls either Mio or Zoe, each with different abilities. Some of these abilities are required to unlock specific in-game achievements or trophies.

For example, only Mio's pig can destroy another pig's house to get the Huffing and Puffing Achievement. However, if Mio does just that, you'll still get the achievement or trophy, even if you control Zoe, despite not actually contributing to the destruction. It's just one of several achievements or trophies in the game.

One caveat is that you must have the full version of the game to unlock achievements or trophies, as you cannot get them when playing through a Friend Pass.

Trip

Meditate with someone to get a trophy

Two players playing together in Journey.

Journey is an unusual multiplayer experience where you meet people randomly on your adventure, and you can't talk to them. Still, you can work together to accomplish things, like acquiring the Reflection Trophy or Achievement. This requires you to meditate with another player for 20 seconds.

So you press a button and do nothing for 20 seconds while your character meditates. Meditation in real life would count as doing something, but when it's the video game character doing it, you're not really doing anything. You still get a trophy or achievement.

It's normal for multiplayer games to give you some kind of bonus for daily logins. However, World of Warcraft gives you a bonus for not playing.

When you are logged out of the game, your Rested XP bar will gradually begin to fill. Then, when you come back, the amount of XP you get for killing monsters increases. The longer you were away, the more the bar fills and the higher the bonus you get. So you get rewarded for not actually playing the game.
