2026 is the year that several hype-worthy survival games will be released in full, or into Early Access. We're talking about indie titles like The road to Vostok and Solarpunkbut also bigger hitters like Subnautica 2which finally seems to be getting some good news regarding its Early Access date after a long, rocky patch. More on that later. In addition to new releases, there is also Enshrouded, which will be launched from EA to a 1.0 version sometime in the fall of 2026.

On the other hand, we have some highly anticipated games like Blackfrost: The Long Dark 2 is facing layoffs and pushing its Early Access release beyond 2026. That's a shame, but it also reflects the state of the gaming industry as a whole. Don't worry, because there are still some interesting survival games to sink your claws into and tide you over until your favorite titles are released. A highly customizable, gritty and deep survival experience

We start with one of the most versatile survival titles Ormod: Directivewhich promises a variety of game modes depending on your preferences. You can enjoy the game's hard-hitting survival mechanics on your own in a solo world, or you can bring friends, jump into a PVP server, or just keep it all PVE.

The crafting and resource management look extensive, going all the way into factory-style automation, as you scour the world for loot while fighting its robotic enemies. No two worlds are alike either, with procedural generation used to keep you on your toes. If you're looking for something that involves gunplay and has more than just a game mode and difficulty to experiment with, look out for this one. There is no set release date yet from House 16 Software.

The road to Vostok

A post-apocalyptic view of the Finnish-Russian border

The road to Vostok oozes the kind of hardcore, FPS survival energy that Metro and STALKER games have. It's not a continuous open-world environment, but instead lets you go from one zone to another until you reach Vostok, a permadeath zone. Before you get there though, you need to prepare and clear as much as possible while avoiding enemy factions that want to take you down.

The gunplay looks very realistic, and it's sure to please anyone who wants their survival game to be as grounded as possible. As a Finn, I can't wait to get my hands on this as the setting hits close to home and exudes that grim, post-apocalyptic darkness. The developer, Road to Vostok Ltd., is releasing the game into Early Access around April 7th, 2026, so if you're interested in supporting a promising indie FPS title, mark that date in your calendar.

Astromine

Voxel space exploration and resource gathering

One of the more interesting sandboxes to come this year has to be Astromine. It has that unique, voxel look that's been popular for a while now, only now you get to travel from plane to plane and tear the world apart for resources. These planets are procedurally generated, and the world is subject to realistic physics, meaning that (un)expected shenanigans will occur when you start digging and mining for resources.

You'll encounter quite a few robotic and alien life forms that are hostile to you during your conquest of planets, so be sure to bring along a friend or two to build bases and spaceships with to have a fighting chance. Alientrap is the developer behind this charming gem, which has no exact planned release date of 2026 yet.

Permafrost

Survival in sub-zero temperatures

Back to more shooter games, Permafrost looks set to deliver a gritty, nail-biting survival game sometime in 2026 when it hits Early Access. It's one of the best-looking survival titles to date, with incredible snowy environments, action-packed gameplay, and some interesting crafting and base-building options.

Plus, exploration really takes you back to Metro game again, so if you miss those days, this might be something to look out for. You'll be able to tackle the freezing temperatures of Permafrost and its wilderness alone or with friends, and you'll definitely need help if you plan to survive against other, not-so-friendly survivors. Bonus points for the fact that you get a canine companion to help you on your journey. Always love a game with a canine friend!

Outgoing

Cozy Van Life Off The Grid

If some of the previously played games seem too hard or challenging, Outgoing could be your jam. There's already a demo for those interested in getting their hands on it ASAP, with a planned release from Square Glade Games set for April 23rd, 2026. The concept is very simple: you travel around in a van and live an offline life. To survive, you must scavenge the world for resources to craft items and items to enjoy your new sustainable life.

Jump in with friends and see if you can figure out how to install solar power, live off the land by starting your own farm, and upgrade your trusty vehicle. This game also allows you to have a pet, which is always a huge bonus in my books. Outgoing looks like a nice breath of fresh air among more brutal survival games, so if you're looking for something light and relaxing, give the demo a try.

Solarpunk

Stay solar-powered on floating islands

Another game that has a playable demo out right now for you to try is Solarpunk. It's also a cozier game for those who prefer their survival titles with a more light-hearted atmosphere. The graphics alone are really charming and vibrant, and the world delivers something a little different from the norm. You travel on a small airship between the islands and find resources to craft more to make your small farm and home base run more smoothly.

As the name suggests, your systems will run on solar energy. You will have an automatic irrigation system for your crops, and in a lot Stardew Valley fashion, you can even indulge in animals at your cute little cabin in the sky. This one is also available to play with friends, so when it eventually releases sometime in 2026, why not tackle it together?

Outward 2

The toughest Open-World Fantasy RPG is getting a sequel

We come to the most anticipated survival games now, and some of the bigger titles known in the genre. Starting, we have Outward 2a continuation of the genius contained within Outwards. It's a return to Aurai with upgraded graphics and systems, and a lot of new adventures and challenges waiting for you. The first one Outwards was known for not having any fast travel and combining survival game elements with classic fantasy RPG gameplay, and the second game is sure to follow suit.

You really need to know how to prepare and approach every encounter in the world with a strategy, as well as accept the fact that you will be weak and vulnerable in the beginning. The world looks gorgeous, and with a story to explore and co-op available, it's the perfect, challenging adventure to jump into with your friends if you want something that tests your strength and teamwork. Looking forward to it sometime around Q3 2026.

Lay Of The Country

A little something for Minecraft and Vintage Story Fans

Minecraft and Vintage story are some of the foundational games in the survival genre, and that's why Lay of the Land getting so much attention right now. It has the charm of those two games in a voxel-based format, and a fantasy world with structures and enemies that ooze mystery.

The creative tools seem pretty deep compared to something similar Minecraftso if you always lamented the limitations of that game, Lay of the Land will definitely let you unleash the full fury of your creativity. Beyond very detailed base building and crafting though, you have some pretty interesting but simple combat. You have plenty of melee options to choose from, but also magic that looks amazing. Southern Cross Initiative is releasing this game pretty soon as well, with a planned date of April 8, 2026.

Subnautica 2

The Hit Underwater Survival Franchise is on shaky ground

Subnautica 2's development has been filled with all sorts of obstacles and drama, as evidenced by the 2025 debacle when KRAFTON fired the CEO and several key members of the team working on the game and delayed the Early Access release until 2026. The latest news is that the game will probably be released on Early Access sometime around May 2026, but if this happens after 2026. delay.

Even though the prognosis for this game looks bad right now, I'm one to hold out hope that something will still come out of it. It is a huge part of the survival game genre, with the highest number of followers of any other unreleased survival game on Steam. The sequel looks set to bring us some brand new creatures, but most importantly, it will finally bring fans co-op, which is arguably one of the most requested features from the previous titles in the series.
