More Doppelganger Threats Loom on the Horizon

The final set of battles rages already in the third and final season of Firepower. While the strange Soul Eater the moon rises high and the world is engulfed in flames, the fire soldiers of company 8 continue their duty, even as they face their strongest enemies yet. Fierce combat is the order of the day, except for evacuating civilians from the chaos, and that means fighting doppelgangers of almost every major character. Everyone has an evil twin from Adolla, and most recently including Assault's own.

Notably, some members of the white-robed cult are now on Shinra's side during the Great Disaster, and that may be the only reason the heroes have any chance against such odds. The Cultists have already ushered a terrifying team of doppelgangers into the world, with Assault just the first of several to step onto the battlefield. Episode 20 covered Tamaki Kotatsu's fight against Doppelganger Assault, so now it's time to face the most powerful Doppelgangers—and the cults that unleashed them in the first place.

The 2026 winter anime season is off to an incredible start, and these 10 series are vying for the top of the charts, according to MyAnimeList.

The remaining doppelgangers are ready to fight Company 8

Benimarus or Joker's Doppelgangers could be next

As far as the big picture of FirepowerThe final season is concerned, episode 20 only pushed the story forward as Tamaki Kotatsu and Assault battled the doppelganger Assault on the city streets. This means that the anticipation at the end of episode 20 is almost the same as it was for episode 19, with the single biggest thread being the intrusion of several doppelgangers modeled after powerful characters in Firepowers protagonist. It's the most effective cliffhanger for two episodes in a row as these doppelgangers promise some great fights as they mimic the ignition abilities of Kurono, Benimaru and more.

Of these original five doppelgangers, only the Assaults have been defeated, and even then Tamaki needed a self-reinforcing glow-up and support from the real Assault to gain victory. Right now, despair is a major factor in the Great Disaster along with its light counterpart hope, meaning that Company 8's morale and the villains' psychological warfare mean everything as the battle rages on. That's why Firepower feels so terrifying at this phase of the plot, with Shinmon Benimaru threatening to induce overwhelming despair in the heroes. The genuine article is nearly unstoppable, and his doppelganger won't hold anything back.

Based on what Firepower fans saw in Tamaki and Assault's joint battle against doppelganger Assault, these upcoming clashes will be more personal than ever. The anime shouldn't just show off the heroes' cool fire-based powers and weapons, because it's about time the anime digs even deeper into the psyche of the heroes. Firepower can use their villainous doppelgangers and the true power of despair against hope to reveal who these Firepower heroes really are and what they stand for.

Tamaki's own battle showed that she centers her strength on the power of erotic passion and the vitality of life with which it is connected, adding new layers to the Lucky Lecher Lure. Something similar, and indeed barkhappen to Kurono, Benimaru, Maki Oze and the rest. The mixed physical and personal pressure exerted by these doppelgängers can either bring out the best in these heroes, or utterly destroy them with the force of reality-turning despair.

Arthur Boyle may face the dragon in episode 21

The Knight King needs a worthy foe to sharpen his blade

A few episodes ago, Arthur Boyle, the Knight King, saved Vulcan and Lisa at the last second in Amaterasu when he used a precise blade pull to kill the little Giovanni bug inside Yu's head once and for all. It was an important victory to finally get the bizarre villain Giovanni out of the picture for good, but it also felt underwhelming and had only a moderate impact on the story. It is not uncommon for Shonen heroes to return to the scene, stronger than ever, to defeat the antagonists and save a life. Arthur did just that, but the self-proclaimed King of Knights needs a much bigger challenge – and he's probably about to get it.

Based on the final scenes of episode 20, where Arthur looks more serious than ever as he looks at the carnage around him, Shinra's onion-headed rival is on his way to becoming a hero worthy of legend. This character gets another chance to really shine after forging a brand new sword, and what's more, the next episode is titled “Dragon and Knight Surge Toward the Heavens.”

Arthur is undoubtedly the knight referred to in that title, and there is indeed a member of the white-robed cult known as the Dragon. Dragon stands as one of the most powerful, prominent cultists of the moment, the perfect foe to test Arthur like never before with his cloak of hardened scales. It might not be one of the expected doppelgänger battles, but such a showdown might be the best way to top off the fight that Firepower fans just saw between Tamaki and Adolla's own Assault.
