A new one Steam release is called Gromopoli is a digital board game that seems heavily inspired by Monopoly Goand it is currently free to play. Monopoly Go has been one of the most successful mobile games in recent years, and Gromopoli may be one of the closest experiences fans can find on Steam for the convenient price of $0.
Since its launch, Monopoly Go has attracted millions of players and has been a consistent source of income for publisher Scopely. It provides the tried and true Monopoly formula to the digital world, with several tweaks and twists that create a fresh board game experience. While Gromopoli lacking many of these innovative features, it still offers gameplay similar to the classic Monopoly game, which fans looking for a comparable experience on PC will probably enjoy.
Gromopoli is a free-to-play digital board game with cooperative modes
The biggest similarity between Gromopoli and Scopely's successful version of Monopoly is likely the isometric graphics and art style. Gameplay-wise, the free-to-play Steam game follows a more traditional ruleset, with the main objectives being to capture properties and avoid tiles owned by other players. According to GromopoliOn the Steam side, it also has unique boards of different sizes, adding variety to the game loop. What does Gromopoli where it stands out, however, is its support for up to eight players, in teams of two to four, which is a nice feature for a free-to-play game.
Based on current reviews, which are on average very positive, it's safe to say that users are happy with Gromopolis premise, and it shows potential to appeal to a larger audience. Most of the positive reviews point to the game's simple but fun gameplay, making it a small game with high replay value. On the negative side, several players note that the mechanics are very similar Monopoly and lacks creativity. Some critics have also cited bugs and errors, which is unsurprising given that the indie game was reportedly developed by a solo developer.
It is worth noting that Steam has many board games that can appeal to fans of Monopoly franchise. There are also official releases, i.a Monopoly 2024 and Monopoly Madness. However, both of these games are paid, costing around $30 USD each, and neither of them have positive reviews. Monopoly 2024for example, currently has a “Mostly Negative” rating, which makes the $30 price tag even less appealing. On the contrary Gromopoli offers quite similar games and is completely risk-free, as it is free to play.
