Rumors have recently circulated indicating that Phil Spencer would retire from his position as head of XboxAs Microsoft has now issued an official answer to. The claims about Spencer's position in Xbox indicated that he could resign as early as 2027.
Spencer has had a fairly fruitful career at Microsoft, which originally joined the company back in 1988 and moved to the Xbox team in 2001. Spencer is currently head of Microsoft Gaming, but rumors have claimed that it would change with the release of the next Generation Xbox console.

“Make sure I don't leak any 'Phil Spencer teases more without announcing Xbox game for 2025
Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, suggests that more without announcement for Xbox consoles arrive by the end of 2025.
A prominent Customs calls Leaker, Ghostofhope, claimed that Phil Spencer would resign from his role and hand over the position to the current Xbox President Sarah Bond. However, Xbox has now disproved the claim, with the head of the Xbox Communications, Kari Perez, which completely denies them. Perez pronounced “Phil does not retire at any time”, in a comment on the limit. Perez is not the first to comment on the claim, with Microsoft Chief Communications Officer Frank Shaw who responded to a tweet about the accusation and stated that rumors were “composed” and therefore incorrect.
Pension and Terms on Microsoft
Phil Spencer is 57 from 2025, which means that Exec can see the prospect of retiring or retiring to another position at some point in his future. However, based on these statements, there is no concrete plan for it to happen soon. As a minimum, it sounds like Spencer will remain at Xbox at least in the next generation, which means he could very well work at Microsoft in the 2030s.
Unfortunately, not everyone on Microsoft is lucky to say the same. Microsoft dismissed 6,000 workers in May 2025, and a new report indicates that 4% of the company's current labor will be dismissed, which may amount to up to 9,000 additional jobs. Spencer noted that “tough decisions” needed to be made for Xbox to continue to succeed. These layoffs also meant cancellation of games and the initiative's closure, which led the restart of Perfect dark to life. That game is now also scrapped, with the title that never sees the light of day in addition to public trailers.
Although this is an unfortunate time for Microsoft employees and much of the gaming industry as a whole, Phil Spencer will not go anywhere at any time and prevents any major development or changes. The affected dismissed Microsoft employees are encouraged to apply to positions elsewhere in Microsoft's gaming department, where their applications will receive “priority review”, according to Spencer, via Wired.
