Mewgenics Creator promises over 500 hours of content to complete

Veteran game developer Edmund McMillen rarely disappoints, and his upcoming tactical roguelike Mewgenics isn't going to buck that trend. Mewgenics will be released on February 10th and currently holds a 90 on OpenCritic.

McMillen recently took to Reddit to answer questions about Mewgenics, the creator's first release since The Legend of Bum-bo, a Binding of Isaac deck-building prequel.

Mewgenics was conceptualized way back in 2011 – after the initial release of The Binding of Isaac. The project suffered from scope creep, which extended the development cycle by several years. Eventually, Team Meat shelved the project, which is one of the reasons why McMillen eventually left the studio.

Greatest tactical RPG ever?

Mewgenics is a procedural tactical role-playing game centered around breeding cats. These cats take on character classes and become your party for tactical combat scenarios. In his ask-me-all answers, McMillen is extremely confident in the depth of Mewgenics.

In response to someone asking what the game's most broken construct is, McMillen writes, “My nephew Eli had one where he could punch one of his other cats in the face, and it would send out 1000 sparks to totally destroy enemies instantly. The game is so crazy man, you don't even know. I could list 100 that are different here, but it makes sense to play here. Totally unique and broken.”

As befits a game created by The Binding of Isaac, Mewgenics will have a lot of content for completionists and hardcore gamers to devour.

Do you think the wait for Silksong was bad? Ed McMillen's fans waited 13 years for Mewgenics' release date

After over a decade, Mewgenics finally has a release date.

“It will take the average player around 200+ hours to 'beat the game' and 500+ hours to 100 percent,” McMillen assures a commenter who wonders if we can expect similar depth to be found in The Binding of Isaac. He also writes that Mewgenics is “one of the greatest tactical RPGs of all time.”

McMillen also confirms that downloadable content is planned for Mewgenics, which is no surprise given the developer's penchant for post-release expansions and updates. The team is actively looking for a publisher to release the game on consoles, saying that the Nintendo Switch 2 is currently the “frontrunner” for a cross-platform release.
