After a nearly decade-long wait, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is officially out on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, marking the end of what has been a rather painful existence for Metroid fans who have been starved for any kind of content.
Unfortunately, a new kind of pain has taken over. This one, on the ears.
Metroid Prime 4's review scores fall far short of the original trilogy
Metroid Prime 4 is good, but maybe not as good as some of you hope it will be.
That's because fans of the iconic Nintendo franchise absolutely can't stand the voices of the in-game companions. So much so that they are actively looking for ways to silence these voices, and even offer to pay Nintendo for a feature to remove them altogether.
Over on Metroid's Reddit, while many are praising the game's mechanics, there's also a vocal group that wants the side characters to just shut up.
“I'm actually more annoyed with Myles than I expected,” wrote one user (Thanks GamesRadar for the flag). “I thought that when you left the area where you met him, he'd stop giving tutorials and hints. An annoyance at first, but a short one. But after three hours, he's still reminding me to save my game (after I'd just saved a few moments before), and when I finish a puzzle, he calls to say something must have changed in the environment.”
“You have to drive around that whole desert collecting green crystals and they punish you for it by having Myles call in every 5 minutes,” wrote another.
Ouch!
A commenter shared that a content creator muted the voice in the game, and as it turned out, nothing of value was lost.
It's probably a small patch fix, but what everyone, including this user willing to pay $10 for the ability to make Myles stop talking, is looking for is a general mute button, something that could come in a patch, provided enough people file complaints.
Games have added Mute buttons before in response to fan backlash
A mute button is surprisingly not uncommon, making the possibility of one coming to Metroid Prime 4 that much more believable. When Borderlands 4 launched earlier this year, it brought a button to specifically lower Claptrap's volume, meaning you could turn off the annoying yellow mascot entirely.
Elsewhere, Dynasty Warriors Origins had a post-launch patch that disabled NPCs' ability to make lots of empty noise. Otherwise known as the “Mute Patch”. That's not all though, as God of War's release on PC also included a feature to disable Atreus and Freya, two of the biggest poster children for annoying companions.
That said, Metroid Prime 4 is really just the latest in a line of recent examples of games that have companions that talk way too much, rehash the same tired lines and hints, and people are frankly sick of it.
