Marvel Rivals has an absurd number of characters to choose from, with 39 heroes and villains to try and “Git God” with, even if you find that your options are significantly reduced if you are either a tank or support player. At the time of writing, there are a total of nine strategists and ten vanguards in the game compared to the 21 duelists when Phoenix drops in just a few days.

Can this really be durable?

It is typical for hero shooters to have a wider selection of DPS characters, with the most likely reasons that they are easier to balance and that it is the most popular role. Everyone wants their time in the limelight, and being DPS means that you are more likely to show up than you are on someone as an invisible woman. But many tankers and support players get annoyed at their lack of alternatives.

It has been a prevailing feeling for a little while, although we recently got a new tank and healer in Emma Frost and Ultron. Before today, there were hopes that Blade (the second season 3 character added) would be a tank, since Phoenix is already confirmed to be a DPS character, and the idea of having a season where two DPS characters are added did not put right with many people.

Unfortunately, a new Marvel -Rivals Läckage has dashed these jumps. First shared by Twitter user Rivalinfo has a video of Blade Gameplay reached social media, and confirms pretty much that he will be a Chunky DPS character rather than a tank. In the video we can see him deal fairly high damage to another leaf, while his HP also sits at 300, which is the higher end for a DPS.

Rivalsinfo admits that parts of the video can be changed, but it is difficult to see Netease changing something as basic as a character's role before launch.

With Blade now a confirmed DPS, anyone who hopes he would be a tank now takes to social media to express his complaints. For example, a Reddit user named Kinggio21 says that they “do not want to see another DPS for the next two seasons” and complain that the balance between all three roles is “ridiculous”.

Similarly, a user named Akanhann is worried about adding two DPS characters in rapid sequence will saturate “already overcrowded DPS role”, which means we will see even fewer thoughts and support players, while a user even says they will “stop playing” until they get more thoughts to play as. To make things worse, season 4 and season 5 are also rumored to add at least one DPS character as well, so the problem will not be fixed soon.

The only brilliant light at the end of the tank for tank and support players is that heroes will release more often now, which means at least waiting for another hero in their role is shorter. It is not much, but Netease clearly wants to meet the DPS audience, so that is something we will probably have to cope with for the foreseeable future.
