Marathon's free charging class comes with some limitations

While Marathon has a variety of character “skins” for players to try out, it also has a free charge option called Rook, but in an effort to balance that, the skin has some limitations not found in some other extraction shooters. It's been a rollercoaster for a year Marathonafter a lackluster testing period last year, along with a variety of controversies, such as art plagiarism, that ultimately caused the game to be delayed until 2026. But after the game's relaunch this month, things seem to be in a much more positive place.

With the extra development time, it seems Bungie took the feedback to heart, not only fixing the art issues, but further improving the game with much-requested features like proximity chat and a solo queue, while adding more environmental detail, better lighting, and more content in general. MarathonThe release date was set for March 5th, earlier than many expected, and Bungie even promised players a free weekend before launch to give fans a taste of what to expect on Day 1. Although Marathonis an extraction shooter at its core, the game has some differences from its competitors.

Marathon Update Fixes Bizarre Destiny 2 Pre-Order Bug

Bungie confirms a new backend update for Marathon, which fixes a very bizarre pre-order bug involving the studio's other game, Destiny 2.

Marathon's “Free Loadout” comes with limitations

One such difference in the game is the use of shells, essentially character classes that each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Each shell fills a certain archetype Marathonincluding the combat specialist Destroyer, support focused Triage and loot goblin known as Thief. Bungie hopes players will find a skin that best suits their playstyle, with additional ways to customize and tailor the overall experience.

Marathon also has its own version of Free Loadout called the Rook, a class that allows players to enter matches equipped with basic gear without risking any of the player's earned items. Although it is seen as the safe option, Marathon adds some restrictions to the turret so that the class isn't seen as a sort of simple button for players. Specifically, players who choose Rook will be loaded into a match later than other players, while only being able to queue solo and not in a group. The idea here is that by entering a round too late, other players risking their gear will get first crack at the best loot, while Rook players simply have to clear and hope not to be targeted by other players. Although easier to spot based on the Rook appearance, this class comes with a passive cloaking mechanism, so the NPC enemies will ignore them completely.

These restrictions could just be a response to what's going on with Embark Studios and the hugely popular game, ARC Raidersat the moment. Many players have become frustrated with ARC Raiders version of a free load, which allows players to trade in random base gear, not having to lose their own items when participating in PvP or extracting with large loot. The difference is that even base level weapons like the Stitcher are very effective, allowing players to still be competitive without risking anything to die. The second element is to choose a free recharge i ARC Raiders doesn't have many restrictions outside of a smaller stock and no secure pockets. Players can load into matches early on and feel confident that the tier 1 weapon they have will still be competitive.

However, Embark is aware of the frustrations surrounding the seemingly justified use of freeloads. While nothing has been confirmed, some studio members, such as design lead Virgil Watkins, have confirmed that the studio may change how free top-ups work in ARC Raiderspossibly changing the type of item given, perhaps changing the number of inventory slots, or making the entire loadout heavier to begin with. Alternatively, Embark has also considered adding a high-level raid with a restriction that prevents free loads from being used to enter. For now, nothing is set in stone, but about Bungie's Rook idea in Marathon gains traction, perhaps it could prompt Embark to make some changes of its own.
