Marathon Update fixes strange pre-order issue

Marathon finally became available for pre-order after a long development cycle and fans immediately started noticing a strange issue involving Bungie's other games, Destiny 2. It has been a long road Marathon after being officially revealed as early as 2023 as corporate layoffs and various controversies have served to hinder the game's development. But after all this, Marathon is finally nearing its release date, offering a new experience for longtime Bungie fans.

After a long period of silence, Marathon resurfaced last year with a gameplay demo and an alpha test, but unfortunately both were met with less fanfare than expected. The feedback ultimately led Bungie to delay Marathon from 2025 entirely so that it could make improvements to core gameplay components such as AI, combat, visuals and social experiences. The studio also had to address a problem with plagiarized art, which only served to increase public perception. The time away seems to have done the game very well, along with a resolution to the plagiarism controversy, Marathon is now about to be released very soon.

Marathon Update fixes Destiny 2 installation issue

Earlier this week, Bungie revealed a new trailer with Marathons official release date and special editions are available for purchase. As part of that announcement, Bungie also confirmed that Marathon was now available for pre-order, but for fans on Steam, the pre-order process had a strange side effect where Destiny 2 automatically started installing. Even if Destiny 2 is Bungie's other game, the two are their own separate games, so the fact that it started installing without any warning left most people scratching their heads.

While conspiracy theorists and those looking for a laugh called the event Bungie's way of getting more people to play Destiny 2 due to its declining population or speculation that this was deliberate, Bungie quickly clarified that this was in fact a bug. The official Marathon Dev Team social media account posted a message saying that the studio had released a fix that resolved the installation issue, so those who pre-order should no longer have this happen. In addition, the update also fixed an error that would appear for Collector's Edition owners trying to activate their code on Steam.

After Marathon's launch delays and controversy, the game seems to be gaining momentum as it nears its new March release date. The re-discovery showed how the game has evolved from what fans previously played in 2025, with more content, much-requested features like proximity chat, as well as better visuals and lighting. Marathon also features a talented voice cast and big names including Roger Clark, Dave Fennoy, Jennifer English, Ben Starr and many more. For those still on the fence, Bungie has also promised an Open Preview weekend before March 5, allowing anyone to check out the game before deciding to commit to the price tag.

While Marathon appears on the rise, there seems to be real concern among fans regarding Destiny 2immediate future. While the Renegades expansion was well received by players, questions remain as to what happens next, as reports indicated that Destiny 2The next major game update was delayed to make way for Marathon. Bungie has yet to clarify or confirm, leaves Destiny 2 players with no information on when to expect Shadow and Order to arrive. Previously, the update was scheduled to launch on March 3, which would have been two days earlier Marathon. Further aggravating is the fact that there is no roadmap for 2026, raising concerns that Destiny 2 could slow down even more as Bungie turns its attention to ensuring Marathon is a hit.
