Marathon 1.0.0.4. The update has a clear goal

Marathons latest patch, update 1.0.0.4, has a surprisingly deep changelog, one that touches nearly every system in the game. There are some changes that noticeably change the way runs can feel, especially on a map like Outpost – some are difficulty-reducing, others are economy-based. But Marathon update 1.0.0.4's biggest target is thermal scopes, and while it's still too early to know for sure, it looks like Bungie has hit hard.

Thankfully, the Thermals take the biggest hit

Thermal scopes are a dominant force in Marathons meta, and for good reason: the ability to detect enemies through environmental protection, track invisible runners, and engage at extreme distances made thermals a surprisingly (frustratingly) strong option, as long as players can actually find them. Bungie has responded Marathon update 1.0.0.4 with a two-part nerf: reduces visual clarity on targets through thermal scopes and significantly reduces the maximum distance at which thermal highlights activate.

  • Sniper thermals get a 44% range reduction, from 180 meters down to 100

  • Precision rifle drops from 100 meters to 80 meters

  • Rifles, LMGs, and SMGs drop from 65 to 60

  • *Guns drop from 55 to 40 meters

On paper, this looks like a pretty hefty nerf. In practice, it is really difficult to call if it is enough. The visual clarity reduction can vary by monitor and settings, and while the range adjustments mean thermals are still the best detection tool in the game, when perhaps Recon's ultimate should – at least it will dominate with a shorter leash. Whether this breaks thermals' grip on the meta or just tweaks it, though, is something that will take a few days of live play to determine.

UESC gets a picky difficulty downgrade

Another capstone change in recent times Marathon The update is a health reduction for most UESC bots, with protective HP on bosses also reduced by a small amount. Bungie knows this change could be controversial, but the studio specifically said it wants bullets and medicine to go further, not to remove the AI faction entirely. For solo runners in particular, the change should ease the brutal resource drain that made UESC engagements feel too punishing.

The outpost's broken wing needed fixing

The third and final big change may be zone specific, but it is changing Marathons Outpost map quite significantly: Bungie has temporarily disabled the switches that opened the Broken Wing access path to the Pinwheel. According to the developer, the entrance removes too much of the risk associated with reaching the Pinwheel, and there are plans to change that. This may frustrate players who had Broken Wing baked into their routes, but Rooks shouldn't be dismayed; an “additional silent method” of entry to Pinwheel remains open, according to Bungie.

Beyond the headlines, 1.0.0.4 makes several minor changes that will compound in a meaningful way: more Med lockers and ammo crates on the perimeter, plus more starting ammo over the free sponsored kits from MIDA, CyberAcme, and Arachne, should alleviate the resource starvation that makes early runs unforgivable. Objective hub points are now displayed at 20 meters, a welcome extension for anyone who has wasted precious time fumbling around for a contract target.

The rook change that will sting the most is the guaranteed WSTR shotgun upgrade which now plays as Compromised, meaning it will break on exfil. Previously, the Arachne Boomstick upgrade allowed Rook mains to effectively farm one of them Marathons better weapons for free, run after run. It's a reasonable fix, though unwelcome to players who have already sworn allegiance to the shotgun Assassin meta that has emerged since Server Slam.

Overall, Update 1.0.0.4 is a broader and more content-rich patch than the playerbase expected. Its thermal scope changes represent Bungie's clearest signal yet about where it wants the weapon's meta to land. It's also another good example of Bungie fixing issues quickly, which in a live service game likes Marathoncan only be good.
