Magic: The Gathering's Director of Production Management says they “could not find a way” to add commander to Avatar: The Last Airbender Set

Magic: The collection has gradually increased its annual number of transitions since the release of the Walking Dead collaboration in 2020. Now there are several crossovers per year, with Marvel's Spider-Man planned to be released at the end of September, and Avatar: The Last Airbender which will follow in November.

A remarkable aspect of the upcoming Avatar set is that there are no preconlined (precon) master released with the set. The introduction of pre -constructed tires with the theme of a central (commander) character has become standard in magic: the collection, so their Avatar remission has marveled some fans.

This was particularly surprising because Avatar has clearly defined fractions and magic: the collection has clearly defined colors, so a tire based on each nation seemed as a natural decision for the design team to make.

At Gamescom, I had the opportunity to chat with Magic's production director Max McCall, who dismissed why Avatar will not have pre-cons that everyone expected.

My full interview with Max McCall will be live next week.

McCall explains that the team struggled to create commanders for Avatar because the show is character-focused, which means that both characters and nations are difficult to play into magic: the collection's color pie foundation for the game's design.

“Avatar is cool because it is about all these characters who work together for different purposes in service for the larger story, but also these characters have their own emotional and spiritual trips over their own stories,” explains McCall. “Usually, character growth refers back to Magic's color pie. Really ambitious people are black, like Zuko at the beginning of the story. But when characters change, and they begin to think, 'actually what is important to me is to follow my own heart;' I want to do things that mean most to me ';' I want to find ways to work with other people and live together in harmony ', then these characters become more red.

“If you take a commander and Aang is the commander,” he continues. “Aang has his own set of colours. At various points in the story, Aang is all of the colours. Which could would you pick for him? You're kind of automatically not doing the character the proper amount of justice. Moreover, what characters make sense in an Aang deck, and what are their colours? We Basically Couldn't Find A Way to make Commander Ducks that Felt Satisfying in Terms of Who Was The Headline Character, What Other Characters Were In The Duck and Did any of it make sense Together. “

McCall also explains why Fire Nation is not necessarily red despite the obvious color association. In magic is a color that represents “freedom, passion and creativity.” The ambition -driven leaders of Fire Nation are more black in nature than red, and their need for oppressive order is closer to white than any other color.

It is an interesting reflection on the design philosophy about magic: the collection and how the universe in addition to sets poses a challenge for designers who need to include third party characters in line with Magic's basic color pie.
