Horror lovers get to experience plenty of tense scares like Grace and fans more interested in Resident Evils action-focused moments get plenty of this with Leon. Resident Evil Requiem is a top-notch franchise entry in many ways, and it sets a high bar for the series' future. It also sets a new standard for the action genre in general.
Between Grace and Leon, Resident Evil RequiemThe characters show that horror and action can really work in harmony together. The action-heavy moments really need to be the blueprint for future action games. Leon is a powerhouse, and his physical prowess goes far beyond his roundhouse kick and his affinity for chainsaws. IN RequiemLeon wields an ax practically blessed by the gods. No item is too ridiculous to parry, and it must be the new standard for future action heroes.
Spoilers ahead too Resident Evil Requiem.
If I can't parry a rocket like Leon does in Resident Evil Requiem, then I want no part of it
Yes, Leon can parry rockets. He can parry oncoming hordes of zombies. Cars, Bullets and Mr. X's giant mutated arms aren't off limits either, if perhaps a bit too much for the imagination in some scenarios. It really seems like nothing is. Leon's ax is a baseball bat, and everything else is simply a ball waiting to be hit. It's not just fun, it's amazing. Leon's parry ability makes him feel practically unstoppable once you get the mechanic down completely. It is essentially Requiemhis very own version of Chris Redfield smashing into a boulder Resident Evil 5.

Look, I know not every action game can encompass something as overpowered as Leon's parries, but it's pretty fun to try to imagine other games that allow for the same power fantasy. What makes it so funny is that Leon is just a regular guy. Yes, he's a super-trained agent, but he's still human. It's like Ellie from The last of us could drop kicks on Bloaters or take downs The last of us part 2's Rat King with his little pocket knife. What Leon can accomplish with a simple ax is ridiculous. Honestly, I really want to know which company i Resident Evil the universe makes that ax because i would buy one in a heartbeat. The thing seems like it's made of adamantium or something.
Example of Leon's superhuman parry ability
Enter Dr. Victor Gideon Resident Evil Requiem isn't a walk in the park, but it's a lot easier if you just parry a rocket flying at Leon's face. Resident Evil RequiemBoss fights feel less scary when you realize that even powerful projectiles aren't impervious to Leon and his trusty axe. Dr. Victor Gideon has obviously been upset with the T-Virus over the years, but he probably never accounted for the power of Leon wielding a small melee weapon.
Even bullets are no match for Leon's axe. When Leon is down in the ARK facility, he has to deal with many Connections soldiers. It's a pretty tough part of the game, but there's already been tons of fun clips showing Leon parrying bullets like it's no problem. Suplex in Resident Evil 4 seemed like the most over-the-top Capcom could go with Leon's fighting skills, but that's clearly not the case.
This and being able to parry Dr. Victor Gideon's missile are probably tied for the most insane items Leon can deflect. A normal car coming at Leon would be wild enough, but a car thrown by Mr. X just takes the ridiculousness to even crazier levels. Mr. X returns inside Resident Evil Requiem is one of the coolest reveals in the game, and Leon has nearly three decades of experience under his belt now to help take down the Tyrant. All those years of experience apparently included intense training with an ax, and it shows. Once upon a time, Mr. X one of the most terrifying enemies Leon has ever faced. Now his throws and attacks are just batting practice.
Seriously, Resident Evil Requiem knows how to show players a really fun time
One minute you're crawling down the corridors as Grace who is really struggling with her skyrocketing stress levels, and the next Leon is using his ax to casually sidestep an explosive. Leon Kennedy's life has taken him a long way since his humble days as the Raccoon City Police Department's bright-eyed and optimistic rookie. The overpowered nature of the parry mechanic can be silly, but it's a really fun way to break the tension. Resident Evil Requiem is downright terrifying at times, and these outlandish action movie-inspired moments offer a much-needed break. Of course, these breaks only happen to players who have really nailed the parry mechanics, but that's just all the more reason to practice these controls.
Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi recently confirmed that DLC is already in development. However, no release window has been revealed yet.
The Resident Evil franchise is a really weird series. It may have some really emotional moments and make compelling comments about out-of-control corporations and paramilitary groups, but there's also Chris Redfield's rock-throwing and Leon's battle-axe skills and suplex-inducing scenes just minutes later. It's really one of the main reasons I grew to love Resident Evil so much in the first place. Yes, there are tons of fun zombie games out there. Resident EvilHowever, the really weird mix of goofy action sequences and incredibly well done horror and light social commentary is something that hasn't been replicated by another franchise.
Leon's ax is definitely overpowered when used correctly, and I hope it stays that way. Each Resident Evil the game has its own special characteristics, and the parry of the ax will definitely be that Requiempp. Many fans have already struck Resident Evil Requiembut trying to perfect Leon's battle ax is a good excuse to dive back in for another playthrough.
