LEGO's Pokemon sets are way worse than Mega Bloks

LEGO recently revealed its first Pokémon sets, but some fans think the Pikachu looks worse than what Mega Bloks has released before. While expectations for these new LEGO products have been high, the reveal left some hoping for more from the insider Pokémons beloved mascot.

LEGO and Pokémon are among the biggest names out there, so a partnership between the two made sense. But Mega Bloks originally had a deal with Pokémonwhich prevents the LEGO company from releasing sets based on the franchise. It wasn't until 2025 that LEGO officially partnered with The Pokemon Company, after Mega Bloks lost the rights to the media franchise. Thanks to this new partnership, many LEGO fans will finally have their dream of getting official sets based on pocket monsters from the games come true. Although it is impossible to say how many Pokémon-themed products could be released in the coming years, LEGO has already unveiled three sets coming in 2026.

If the LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon is any indication, I'm sure your best bet is to buy this LEGO Pokemon set and do it now

LEGO's new Pokemon sets were just revealed, and if you're on the fence about one of them, the LEGO Millennium Falcon set is why you should buy it now.

LEGO fans are not happy with the Pikachu set

Among the upcoming arrivals, LEGO introduced Pikachu and the Poke Ball. Priced at $199.99 USD, the set is on the expensive side, and some fans find the design underwhelming. In fact, Reddit posts have started comparing it to older Mega Bloks Pikachu sets. Specifically, the price difference was a significant disappointment to many people, as the 2,050-piece LEGO set came in at over double the cost. Mega Bloks has released several Pikachu sets in the past, but two of the most common are Jumbo Pikachu and Motion Pikachu, both of which can still be purchased for under $100. Jumbo Pikachu has 806 pieces and Motion Pikachu has 1,092, which is about half of the pieces in the LEGO set. While this is likely part of the reason for the price difference, the size of these Mega Bloks sets is similar to LEGO Pikachu.

Pokemon fans think LEGO Pikachu looks “uncanny” compared to Mega Bloks

While the price was an issue for many fans, this was exacerbated by what was considered an inferior design in some respects. Despite coming with a Poke Ball, the LEGO model of the electric Pokemon looked “creepy” to some people, especially the face. There were also concerns that the blocky body would not be easy to pose when removed from its stand. Also, it's worth noting that when comparing products, the Motion Pikachu from Mega Bloks includes a crank that makes the model move, a feature missing from the more expensive LEGO set.

LEGO's Eevee set looks better

While the reception of LEGO Pikachu has been poor, opinions of the Eevee set have been more positive. This set comes in at 587 pieces and costs just $59.99, significantly cheaper than Pikachu and Poke Ball. Although the Eevee model is smaller, many LEGO fans have found the design more appealing. However, this has led people to question what went wrong with the Pikachu design, especially considering it's the franchise mascot.

In addition to these two individual models, LEGO revealed the set of Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise. While the designs for these Pokemon's final evolutions look somewhat similar to their in-game counterparts, the price comes in at a whopping $649.99 USD. This makes it the most expensive set in the line by a wide margin, but it does contain 6,838 pieces. In addition to the Pokemon models, the base is divided into three separate areas based on the water, fire, and grass types of the animals.

It will be interesting to see what impact the negative discourse surrounding the Pikachu set can have on sales when the series is released on February 27th. Given the enormous popularity of Pokémon franchise, these new LEGO sets will likely sell well regardless. Unfortunately, scalpers have used this to their advantage by listing sets for huge price increases on eBay.
