Jim Carrey is reported in talks for Sonic 4

In 2022, Jim Carrey announced that he was “pretty serious” about retiring and would only return “if the angels bring some kind of script written in gold ink.” He would later admit that this was “hyperbole” when he reconsidered the role of Doctor Ivo 'Eggman' Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, reflecting that he “bought a lot of stuff” and needed the money.

Unsurprisingly, then, he's in talks to return in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, according to reputed leaker and insider Daniel 'RPK' Richtman.

We don't know much about Sonic 4 yet, but DanielRPK recently claimed that it might be called Sonic CD, lending to its rumored time travel elements. And while writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller wrote Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as a “satisfying capper” for Eggman, giving Carrey an out for the series, he said last year, “If the content is interesting, I'll be back”.

“I never turn down a role if I'm not interested,” Carrey explained. “I love this team and it's fun to make a film with them […] The passionate fans always respond positively, and they help me a lot by asking me things like, “How about this next one?” Sonic is a movie that we all make together.”

If Sonic 4 is indeed an adaptation of Sonic CD, “interesting” is an understatement. The game follows the Blue Blur as he struggles to stop Eggman from collecting the Time Stones, which when combined give him control over time itself. Throughout the game, we see him conquer Little Planet, opening temporal passages to invade its past, while unleashing an army of Metal Sonics on its inhabitants.

Amy arrives to save the Blue Blur from an army of Metal Sonics at the end of the third film, and the concept art was shown to feature Eggman as a ruler with a robotic hedgehog by his side, so it certainly looks like that's the direction Sega and Paramount are taking.

However, it will be a while before we find out any concrete details, as Sonic the Hedgehog 4 doesn't hit theaters until next year, but in the meantime, fans are remaking the entire original film to show the infamous Ugly Sonic remade in 2019.
