I am so grateful that I lived through the 90's Beat-EM-up Renaissance right now. Between the streets in Rage 4, TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, MMPR: Redas Rewind, Battletoads and upcoming games such as Scott Pilgrim ex and absolutely, there has been plenty of nostalgia bet for arcade rats in recent years. Surprise your geriatric nerds, we eat well.
The Marvel heroes, and especially Spider-Man and X-Men, have been particularly absent from the party. They undoubtedly made the biggest contribution to the Beat-EM-up, but still the most powerful heroes of the earth have not yet made their retro return. Thankfully, Shredder's Revenge Studio, Tribute Games, has raised the (human) torch with Marvel Cosmic invasion.
Family
Thanos and a six-hour phone call is the indication that Fortnite becomes the ultimate crossover game
Epic had no interest in crossover characters until Endgames directors asked the studio to add Thanos.
I got to play some assignments during the Summer Game Fest last weekend, and I am impressed by how much Hylla's style has been developed since Shredder's Revenge, given that it was already such a good game. Marvel Cosmic Invasion focuses on the heroes and what makes them different, adds a touch of tag -style and flavors with a side of the Marvel universe that is undexplored. There has been a long wait for a new superhero beating, but tribute is to make sure it was worth waiting.
A dream list of supes
The most famous Marvel Beat-EM-Up, X-Men Arcade, had six playable heroes. Marvel Cosmic Invasion more than doubles that list to 15, and ensures that regardless of the side of Marvel -Fandom you are on, there will be a character for you.
Much of the guard list consists of the obvious A-lists. You cannot make a throw like this without Spider -Man, Venom, Captain America, Wolverine and Storm, obviously, but the other characters – at least those who have been revealed so far – are not necessarily the ones you can expect.
Cosmic invasion is based on 2006 Marvel Comics Crossover Event Annihilation, an outer space -centric story about Annihilus invasion of the 616 universe from the negative zone. This event is remarkable in the Marvel history for several reasons: the introduced Richard Ryder like Nova Prime, it saw Phyla-velle take over the mantle Quasar, and it led to the creation of the modern guardians of the Galaxy team as we know today. Nova, Phyla-vell and Rocket Raccoon are all on the cosmic invasion list, which is a strong indicator that the Holocaust history is more than just window clothes to look up lots of bugs.
She-Hulk was the most recently announced character. She is neither a beat-European-up-up-staple nor a large part of the Holocaust, which says I expect the unexpected for the rest of the guard list.
Complete kit for each hero
While the turtles in Shredder's Revenge all played in a similar way, cosmic invasions are all completely different. Some fly, other web swings, and others skip the stage to turn on a guy and knit him over and over with Adamantium chlorine. Some heroes can avoid, others can block. Some enjoy the range, others are more in your face, slices and dice with the large sharp claws.
It is fantastic to see such a diverse harvest of characters, especially considering the huge guard list. Buttons do completely different things depending on the character you play. For example, Spider-Man has several holding inputs. Keeping Jump lets him webswing (which can turn into a swinging kick, of course) while keeping the punch will push out a web that pulls enemies towards you. You can fire web missiles that anxiety and blind enemies, or keep to release a spray of web missiles for some impressive audience control. Wolverine, on the other hand, has a variety of grip and throwing techniques that he can use to isolate enemies or discard them from allies. He also has the big 'OL claws that I mentioned once or twice.
All this individuality really comes to life thanks to Cosmic Invasion's Character Swap Mechanic. Like Classic Tag Team Marvel Fighting games, you choose two heroes at the beginning of each assignment, and you can freely switch between them whenever you want. This can sometimes be advantageous depending on each hero's abilities. It may be a good idea to change in storm just before a stamp of enemies takes over the entire lower half of the screen so you can, for example, fly over it. But for the most part, character change is less about tactics and more about pulling off cool features.
There is some overlap between your characters when you change, so if you are in the middle of combination with Spider-Man when you change to Venom, that combination will continue when Spidey lands his last blow and Venom takes over. Marvel Vs. Capcom Flair without being equally technically demanding. Change of character keeps the action fresh and exciting, which can sometimes be a challenge for this genre.
Embrace the Holocaust wave
Tribute shows a lot of love for the series in cosmic invasion. Annihilation is an important but often overlooked story that directly led to MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy, and I can't wait to see how the game explores that era of Marvel series.
The publisher Dotemu has made a name for himself with Retro Beat-EM-ups, and as much as I have enjoyed playing each, they are not games that I feel drawn to get back to over and over again that I am so short. With the number of characters and combinations in cosmic invasion, I already itch to explore new team-ups and strategies. Just think about it: by 15 characters it means there are 14 different side pecches for Wolverine! I think I let him handle the knife knitting, while everyone else can do everything else.
