Gaming insider NateTheHate has shed some insight as to why Baldur's Gate 3 will not be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in the future. According to the insider, the relationship between Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios and Wizards of the Coast could be a sticking point preventing this port from ever happening.
On paper, the slow, turn-based gameplay of Baldur's Gate 3 is a good match for the Nintendo Switch 2. The critically acclaimed CRPG would be right at home on Nintendo's latest console, opening up the game to an audience that may have never tried it before. And with Nintendo's recent push to bring third-party titles to the Switch 2, it always felt like a distinct possibility. Every possible port would not arrive without concern – Baldur's Gate 3 is notoriously heavy on performance during act three, which can make it tough on the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. But beyond that one act, it's not a very performance-heavy game, so if Larian could have solved those act three issues, it would feel like a huge barrier to Baldur's Gate 3 on Switch 2 had been resolved. But there is allegedly one problem that just won't go away.

Larian and Wizard of the Coast's relationship may stop BG3 from switching
Gaming insider NateTheHate at X recently revealed that “Larian would love to bring Baldur's Gate 3 to Switch 2.” However, that doesn't seem to be happening, as “their relationship with Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast is not healthy.” The comment came in response to a comment that Larian manager Swen Vincke made during a recent Divinity AMA on Reddit, there, when asked about Baldur's Gate 3 on the Nintendo Switch 2 happened, said: “We would have loved it but it wasn't our decision to make.”
For obvious reasons, Vincke does not publicly state a strained relationship between Larian and Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast. It is unclear why that would be the case either. It is known that Larian initially began working on Baldur's Gate 4 before canceling it, citing a lack of creative inspiration to dive right back into that universe. Larian also didn't create any DLC for Baldur's Gate 3 for the same reasons. So while it may be that the companies have a difficult working relationship now, there was a world where they continued to put together Baldur's Gate 4.
It's definitely disappointing news for Nintendo Switch 2 players. Getting the 2023 game would have been huge for the Switch 2, but in the current environment it seems like it's just not going to happen. Regardless, it's really not an issue between Larian and Nintendo. The developer recently released Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition on Switch 2, giving players a chance to catch up on the series before the next title, Divinity.
With this in mind, Baldur's Gate 3 may become the odd one out among modern Larian titles when it comes to the Nintendo Switch 2. It is very possible that Divinity launch on the platform, whether day and date with other consoles or later, as is the case with many Switch 2 ports. For now, players will just have to wait and see what Larian has planned for his next title. It has already started to shed some light on what players can expect, it recently claimed Divinity has a better character creator than Baldur's Gate 3. Given the critical and commercial success of BG3expectations of Divinity will be higher than ever.
