If any Hunter X Hunter character could beat Meruem, they are

Togashi never shoots away from showing how grand world Hunter X Hunter is and exactly how weak even the strongest characters we meet are really. Of these, the strongest shown in the entire Hunter X Hunter has been Meruem, the seemingly infallible king of the Chimera ants. But even though Netero failed to dampen him in their first meeting, there are still some Hunter X Hunter characters who can beat, maybe even dead Meruem.

Now, (almost) none of these characters would actually defeat Chimera Ant King in a fair 1v1; Meruem is far too absurd strong for someone to even close to doing so. But each of these characters has a Nen ability that can somehow overcome Meruem and serve as a profit condition against him. If there is any person in Hunter X Hunter who comes closer than even Netero to defeat Chimera Ant King, it would be one of these.

Knuckle

Of someone on this list, Knuckle is the least likely to beat Meruem in a fight, even if all odds fall to his advantage. But as long as Knuckle can cooperate with someone with more offensive abilities, Knuckle Apr can weaken Meruem's defense to the point that all Nen-infused attacks can probably hurt him, at least to some extent.

Apr is also called the potclean.

Knuckle has an ability called Hakoware, which can call a small Nen animal called Apr that can attach to an enemy's knuckles have hit. Phinks is one of Phantom Troupe's best fighting, which is an amplifier who holds its own against other top levels such as Uvogin and Nobunaga. But just being strong is not enough to beat Meruem, and even the entire Phantom squad can die before he will even scrape the king in a direct struggle.

However, Phink's Ripper Cyclotron ability can eject enough power to not only beat Meruem, but him. Ripper cyclotron increases the damage Phink's next punch will act based on how many times he winds his arm. From what we have seen so far, it does not seem to be a limit to how many times he can spin it. As such, it may take a thousand or so swings before he can deal with injuries, but as long as Meruem waits around, or if Phinks manages to surprise him, in combination with another character's ability, Ripper Cyclotron has the potential to tear Meruem into strips.

Crollo Lucifer

Phantom Troupe's head is a character that is not weak in any way, but he does not shine because of his power but with his intellect. Chrollo's ability, Skill Hunter, allows him to collect a number of specialized Hatsu by taking it from others. This means that if Chrollo is given enough time and information on a goal, he can certainly find a collection of abilities that directly counteract his goal and a plan to confirm his victory.

When it comes to specific ways that he could best could be meruem, any ability on this list can be stolen by Chrollo and used at Ant King. If an answer is not enough, Chrollo has an even greater chance than the actual owners of the ability, as he can combine them together. If Chrollo steals an ability of stealth type, such as Meleoron's perfect plane, there is nothing to prevent him from uploading a stolen Ripper Cyclotron a ton while it is completely intangible and then release a blow that Meruem does not even know the direction for before he is decomposed.

Sometimes everything that holds you back is your own mind. Of someone in Hunter X Hunter, this stands best for Knov, an otherwise impressive Hunter who is discouraged by his own uncertainty and horror when witnessing the horror from the Chimera ants.

Knov was theoretically also able to capture Meruem in his hide and seek ability to manage until he starves to death.

Halkenburg Hui Gou Rou is one of the cookie princes participating in the succession war aboard the black elections. Although he has only learned what Nen is recently, Halkenburg has what is likely to be the strongest Nenstagen in Hunter X Hunter with his possession arrow.

This ability allows Halkenburg to shoot an arrow at a goal. After meeting, the goal falls into a position of sleep and replaces bodies with one of Halkenburg's followers. This ability cannot be blocked under any circumstances, and there is nothing that Meruem can do to defend himself against the arrow itself, or something Halkenburg and his men will do with him when he is in a normal human body.

Camilla hui gou rou

Nanika

Hunter X Hunter shows us that there are always larger fish in the pond. We start by seeing how Gon dominates others much older and stronger than him, just to realize that he even loses the most incompetent Nen users in Heaven's arena. Then, even after he has become stronger, we meet chimery ants that completely overpower them. Even after training specifically to go against these monstrosities, the possible threat of meruem is so strong that Gon never even interacts with him.

Fortunately, this is also true for the king. No matter how strong or excessive Meruem can be, a simple child's wish can immediately remove her life, with this child like Alluka Zoldyk (or rather, AI who lives in her). Komugi

This may be a police officer, but it will be disrespectful not to mention the only character that actually beat Meruem in Hunter X Hunter. This may not be in direct battle, but Komugi, a normal human girl, continuously beats Meruem over and over in Gungi, a board game where all things are controlled by intellect.
