Charlie Day, the voice of Luigi in the The Super Mario Bros. Movie franchise, would be happy to step into the role again if Luigi's mansion game would get its own animated spin-off movie. Day has expressed an appreciation for the ghostly Super Mario franchise games starring the green-shirted plumber, and while he doesn't know if they'll be made into a movie, he thinks it would be a great idea that he's happy to dive into.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is getting ready to hit theaters on April 1st, with many returning stars from the first film, including Day. It is a follow up to Nintendo and Illumination's success The Super Mario Bros. Moviewhich was released in 2023 and blew the doors off the box office, and is currently the sixth highest-grossing animated film in film history. After the success of the first film, several fans have identified themselves Luigi's mansion as one of Nintendo's franchises most deserving of a movie, and the actor who plays Mario's brother seems on board with the idea.
The Super Mario Galaxy movie leak may have ruined a major character
A new listing for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may spoil the appearance of a certain villain in the sequel Illumination.
Charlie Day would love to star in a Luigi's Mansion movie
Ahead of the premiere of the first sequel, Day said he would be “thrilled” to star in a spin-off that captures the creepy nature of one of the best games released on the GameCube. In an interview with ScreenRant alongside performers Anya Taylor-Joy and Keegan-Michael Key, who will reprise their roles as Peach and Toad respectively, Day was asked if he would be interested in playing Luigi again for a Luigi's mansion spin-off, confirming that he would gladly take the role if it was offered to him. “Yeah, it would be a lot of pressure,” he commented, before adding, “But if they do, I'm in.”

Day indicated that he is a fan of Luigi's mansion series, covering three console-based games and a Capcom-developed arcade cabinet that came out in 2015. Even before the first movie was released, some fans noted nuances of Luigi's mansion in The Super Mario Bros. Movies first trailer, which closed on a five-second clip of Luigi running terrified through a magma-coated wasteland from a horde of Dry Bones before barricading himself behind a pair of double doors. That clip made the final cut of the film, and while no ghosts were vacuumed up during the film's runtime, many fans couldn't help but notice that Luigi was used in the biggest horror aspects of the kid-friendly film.
Along with Day's support for such a film, he also indicated that he has some ideas about how it could be a success. “And not that you would make it as a children's horror movie, but it could have some kind of jump scare in it, which would be fun,” he noted. Key also came up with the idea of adding some light-hearted video game-style jump scares Super Mario Bros. Film universe, saying everyone loves them, with Taylor-Joy jokingly recording, “Especially 3-year-olds.”
There is currently no indication that a Luigi's Mansion movie is in the works, and Day indicated that he hasn't heard anything that would point to him getting top billing in an upcoming Super Mario film. “It seems like it's going to be a great movie, but I'm not… They don't put me in charge of movie studios and for good reason,” he explained. Nevertheless, if rumors of a Luigi's Mansion 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2, which began to be released around the summer of 2025, turns out to be true, then Nintendo could try to pull together another movie to help increase its popularity among gamers.
