I think I've figured out what Overwatch 2 is doing with the story

Overwatch 2 story speculation and potential plot spoilers ahead.

Overwatch 2 recently revealed Vendetta, a sword-wielding gladiator with chips on both of her shoulders. While the new hero makes history as the first dedicated melee hero from DPS, what makes her even more groundbreaking is her ties to lore. As the daughter of Antonio Giordani, a former Talon commander killed by Blackwatch, Vendetta has a score to settle with both sides of the Overwatch-Talon conflict. It really seems like Overwatch 2 sets up Vendetta as the next major antagonist to Future Earth.

But it can only go deeper than that. From context clues, short stories and leaks, evidence suggests Overwatch 2s first melee damage hero could be at the center of a massive lore shakeup. While most of this is speculation, I believe Vendetta will rise as a third faction in the conflict between Talon and Overwatch, recruiting several of the newer heroes to her side in the process. Although I could be wrong, there could be a large sum Overwatch 2 years in the making conspiracy unfolding before our eyes.

How Overwatch 2's new hero could change the game

Vendetta's cinematic trailer revealed that she is the daughter of Antonio Giordani, a former smuggler, arms dealer and businessman for Talon. I say “previously” because Gabriel Reyes kills him in the Retribution Overwatch Archives PvE mission from the original game, much to the chagrin of fellow Blackwatch agent Cole Cassidy. Along with Genji and Moira, Cassidy and Reyes stole Vendetta's future, leading her down a path of revenge.

When she came of age, Vendetta became a gladiator at the Colosseo known for taking down war machines with nothing but the Palatine Fang, her hard greatsword. But during Vendettas Overwatch 2 cinematic, she calls her entire act “a means to an end.” She plans to use her fame, glory and — most importantly — her following to “take back everything that was stolen from us.”

It's clear that Vendetta is planning some big moves, and some recent rumors confirm that. According to a credible Overwatch 2 Vendetta will raid Talon HQ, cut off Doomfist's arm and kick him out a window in an upcoming movie. The hostile takeover ends with a wave of Talon activity, including their arrival at Overwatch's hidden base. While this may end up being false, the leaker accurately predicted the Ramattra and Zenyatta series, plus Vendetta's name and her connection to Antonio before the reveal, giving this story leak some credence.

The new hero has reason to hate both Talon and Overwatch; her father's killer is now the Talon agent Reaper, and Moira is one of its bosses. Meanwhile, Cassidy and Genji have both joined Overwatch, and Blackwatch was a branch of the original organization. Vendetta's vendettas make perfect sense, and a hostile takeover of Talon would give her the resources to deal with both sides.

If these leaks are true, Doomfist may no longer be part of Talon, and it's safe to assume that Vendetta would want to destroy Reaper for obvious reasons. Moira would likely be in trouble as well, given her involvement in Antonio's death, but I could see Sigma and Maximilien, who are said to be present during the rumored biopic, siding with Vendetta for survival and profit, respectively. Sombra and Mauga aren't exactly loyal to Doomfist, so it wouldn't be surprising if they joined Vendetta's new Talon, while Widowmaker is a bit of a wild card.

However, it wouldn't be a stretch of the imagination to imagine Vendetta recruiting a handful of other newer heroes beyond Mauga. Illari, Hazard and Freja are them Overwatch 2 heroes who seem like perfect recruits for Vendetta's new Talon, due to their shared themes of listlessness and resentment towards both Overwatch and Talon:

Illari is aimless and lonely after the death of the other Inti warriors, and has had sympathetic interactions with Talon-like characters such as Doomfist, Sombra, and Widowmaker.
Hazard was paralyzed in the crossfire between Talon and Overwatch and stole the powerful vanadium isotope from Moira.
Freja, a former Overwatch search and rescue agent, was left bitter when the world turned her back on the organization and has taken bounties from Talon boss Maximilien.

Of the other new heroes added Overwatch 2Sojourn, Juno and Wuyang have joined Overwatch, Ramattra leads Null Sector and Junker Queen rules Junkertown. Kiriko, Lifeweaver and Venture are affiliated with independent groups, but their heroic ideals make them unlikely to join Vendetta.

Illari has felt particularly disconnected from the knowledge of Overwatch 2who only appears once in the “Futures Past” storyline with Soldier: 76, so a fall to the dark side would allow the character to actually join the story in a tragic way that leaves room for future redemption.

This conspiracy may technically go even deeper. In the short story “Lucky Man”, it was revealed that a mysterious organization represented by an eye with three dots above and below it was responsible for destroying Overwatch HQ – a secret faction that Sombra has been trying to learn about for years. It remains to be seen how this secret group would capitalize on the chaos Vendetta would cause, but given that they seem to capitalize on Overwatch and Talon's conflicts and failures, it wouldn't be a stretch to see them get involved.

Overwatch 2 is gearing up for a new story

Beyond speculation and leaks, there is evidence within the game itself that something similar could happen. The Overwatch 2 the mid-Season 19 update added a story feature to the game that chronicles major movies and series for players to easily read. Most of the lore drops from this year – including the cinematic where Freya meets Maximilien – are available right now, with an empty slot for a new video labeled “Coming Soon” – right in the perfect spot for the leaked footage of Vendetta's hostile takeover of Talon.

Ramattra and the Null Sector have officially retired, making way for a new major antagonist to take the stage.

If any of this were to happen, the classic battle between Overwatch and Talon could be getting a new player in the form of Vendetta's faction. Theoretically, the eliminated members of Talon—including Doomfist, who miraculously survived his encounter—may even have to team up with Overwatch to bring Vendetta down. This can be an absolutely huge setup for Overwatch 2s lore… or I could be completely off base. Regardless, something big is coming Overwatch 2 soon, and Vendetta seems like she'll be the catalyst.
