How Toji could have walked away victorious

Summary

  • Toji Fushiguro's actions in the Hidden Inventory arc shaped the entire story of Jujutsu Kaisen.

  • Toji's superstition and failure to finish off Gojo led to crucial developments in the series.

  • Toji's inner conflict and missed opportunity to kill Gojo ultimately shaped his character arc in the series.

There are many moments in Jujutsu Kaisen which are so important that they change the trajectory of the story. Quite often, these moments usually don't mean much when first shown, although the gravity of their importance is felt much later in the series. Whether such a moment comes because of a character's direct involvement or not, the consequences are felt for years to come.

One such, and perhaps the most important, example of this is Toji Fushiguro. Although he was an outcast from his clan and worked as a pure assassin, his direct involvement in Jujutsu Kaisen's The Hidden Inventory arc was so pivotal that it shaped how the rest of the story unfolded. So let's go over why Toji was so important and how he could have emerged victorious from his fight with Gojo and Geto.

Story Arc

Hidden Inventory Arc

Toji made his debut in the Hidden Inventory arc as the central antagonist of young Gojo and Geto. He was cast out of the Zenin Clan due to being born without cursed technology, but instead he had a Heavenly Limitation that made his physical abilities far greater than anyone else's due to not even having a drop of cursed energy in his body . More than that, his senses and reflexes were also cranked up to 11.

In the arc, Toji was hired by the Time Vessel Association to kill Riko Amanai to facilitate the development of Master Tengen, which proved to be quite a challenge for the Sorcerer Killer as she was protected by Gojo and Geto; the two strongest wizards on the planet. However, the legendary assassin was able to successfully complete his mission as he seemingly killed Gojo, easily defeated Geto, and successfully assassinated Riko.

You, with all your blessings, lost to a monkey like me who can't even use Jujutsu.

This was perhaps the most important moment of all Jujutsu Kaisenas Gojo, due to Toji's arrogance, was able to learn the Reverse Cursed Technique and Cursed Technique Reversal, becoming the single strongest wizard in the entire world. Furthermore, this also led to Geto feeling alienated and left to stir up his rage, leading him down the path of villainy, which then led to the events of Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

As Gojo and Geto had now reversed their belief system on how to treat the non-wizards of the world, they became enemies, with the latter wanting to force all non-wizards to evolve or die in the process, the former realizing his solitary strength meant that he had a duty to protect them. After Gojo was forced to kill Geto, Kenjaku eventually found the body and gained his cursed technology by taking over it, leading to the events of Jujutsu Kaisen really, all because of Toji's dedication.

Jujutsu Kaisen: The Underlying Battle Behind the Scenes

Jujutsu Kaisen has many underlying philosophies as part of its story, but there is one main theme that shows a battle between ideologies!

How Toji could have walked away

The inner battle within him

Toji and Gojo both had the same problem when they first encountered each other, which was overconfidence. Gojo was the inheritor of the Limitless Cursed Technique and the Six Eyes, giving him unparalleled control and understanding of Cursed Energy, while Toji had built a reputation as a Sorcerer Killer who managed to assassinate every single target he was thrown at. .

However, in their first encounter, Toji's Heavenly Restriction proved to be superior as he was able to defeat Gojo quite easily. In the final blow, he viciously stabbed Gojo, inflicting damage that would have killed anyone else, causing his hubris to get the better of him as he walked away from the scene, leaving his brain intact. Due to this oversight, Gojo finally unlocked the secret of Reverse Cursed Energy, allowing him to heal from all this damage and realize a whole new way to use Limitless.

The truth of the matter is that, more than just completing his contract, Toji had a pretty obvious inner conflict within himself. Due to being kicked out of the Zenin Clan due to his lack of Cursed Energy, Toji began to tease those who possessed it. So his fight with Gojo was more than just completing his mission, as it was a subconscious fight for him to prove himself superior to all wizards as a way to strike out against those who had cast him aside.

He wanted to prove to the world that even if you are the strongest wizard in the world, you can always be defeated as a response to how the Zenin Clan treated him. However, there was no one there to hear him. The speed with which he left Gojo proved to be his undoing, as even stated by Gojo at the beginning of their second confrontation. Due to his certainty of defeating Gojo and proving superior to Cursed Energy itself, he did not go back to tie up all the loose ends of Gojo's survival.

The reason you will lose is because you didn't cut my head off!

Toji was incredibly knowledgeable about Cursed Energy, so he knew that the brain was the source of everything related to it. To ensure that Gojo could not survive, Toji should have cut off his head to ensure that the Cursed Energy would not be used to heal him. If that had been the case, he would have walked away victorious, free to do as he pleased for the rest of his days, as the only one who could stop him lay dead at his feet.

But this would only sink Toji to further depths of depravity and isolation. Due to Gojo's return, Toji died and entrusted Megumi to his enemy, making sure his son turned into a good person and disliked him. When he was brought back in the Shibuya incident, he was able to truly complete his character arc after seeing Megumi, knowing that in his final moments he made the right choice in entrusting his son to Gojo. So, perhaps because of this completion of his character arc, Toji was somewhat redeemed.

Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime.
