How to unlock transmogging and change your appearance in Nioh 3

Like other action RPGs with custom characters, Nioh 3 thankfully gives you a chance to change your appearance again, along with letting you transmog gear to change the look of your gear.

Although this isn't available right away, meaning you'll have to put in some work to get there first. Either way, you'll know exactly what you need to do in Nioh 3 to get there with this quick guide to transmogging and changing appearances.

How to Unlock Change Appearance and Transmog Equipment Menu

In Nioh 3 you will be able to transmog equipment and change your appearance for the first time since the prologue when you unlock the “Change Your Appearance” feature in Eternal Rift — the area to which you gain access at the end of the “Hamamatsu Incident” story mission..

This mission is specifically a big effort where you have to clear the Hamamatsu Town Crucible, which requires you to win the Jakotsu-baba boss fight in the final stretch.

If you manage your time without side quests and exploration to level up before now, it takes about two to four hours from the start of the game.

If you need time to get to the quest's recommended level of 14, this can take you anywhere between five and ten hourss, depending on how much you explore Warring States.

In the final episode of “The Hamamatsu Incident”, Ii Naotora will give you the guiding mirror, followed by your sudden return to the eternal rift – also for the first time since the prologue.

You will be able to fast travel back to the Eternal Rift at any time from the completion of the “Hamamatsu Incident” quest onwards, but The 'Change Your Appearance' room is on the top floor of the house in the north of the eternal divide.

Simply go to the shrine, go up the stairs and turn right until you have reached the human-shaped icon on your minimap.

How Transmogging works and changing your appearance works

Although the initial wording of this in-game menu makes it sound like you can only change your character's appearance again, you will also be able to transfer your equipment in Nioh 3: meaning you can change the appearance of your gear to whatever you choose from what you own — while keeping the stats and abilities of what you actually have.

For example, we'd stuck with the Thief's Waistguard for our legguard armor — because it had the highest defense stats and other abilities, despite not fitting the rest of our Ninja-style build as they were essentially shorts; however, thanks to the newly unlocked transmogging at the time in Nioh 3, we changed the Thief's Waistguard to that of the Heir's Shinobi Waistguard.

This way, you get all the extra benefits of nicer gear, without having to sacrifice the better stats of your inferior gear.

When it comes to changing your appearance, you can get caught up the same menu style you had at the beginning of the game: allows you to adjust everything from your protagonist's base, body, face and hair, to facial hair, makeup and their voice.

Now that you can fast travel back to the Eternal Rift whenever you want, you can also change your appearance as often as you need from this point.

Interestingly, the “Change Your Appearance” menu in Nioh 3 also comes with a “Transform” option: specifically so you can change the appearance to a character from another save file. If you decide to do a second run at Nioh 3, this adds some fun to the replay value – because, if you really liked your original protagonist, you can carry over your previous save's custom look without having to recreate it from scratch.
