The Temple of Trials is a hidden dungeon that can only be unlocked through Xenlon's wish-granting mechanic. When you reach Cloudsgate Citadelis the main goal to fight and defeat Xenlon. Each time you win, Xenlon will grant a wish from a set list. To make things more difficult, each time you fight Xenlon, you must defeat them in fewer turns than the previous fight. In this guide we will explain how to reach Xenlon, and how to unlock Trials Temple in Dragon Quest 3 Remake.
How to reach Xenlon in Dragon Quest 3 Remake
After defeating Zoma and rolling the credits, DQIII Remake will technically start you back before the fight with Zoma. However, there is one important difference this time: if you return to Dragon Queen's Castle, you will be able to ascend to ??? (the region is called Sky in the DQ community).
How to reach Cloudsgate Citadel in Dragon Quest 3 Remake:
??? is the way to Cloudsgate Citadel. It consists of several dungeons that you have previously visited. To begin the journey, head to the Dragon Queen's Castle and head to the rounded chamber in the northern part of the structure. The elf girl will now have a quest marker over her head. Talk to the girl, then enter the large beam of light in the center of the room to ascend.
The first part of ??? is a large green field, with a shingle Secret place and what appears to be a cave entrance. The Secret Spot holds a Metal Slime Friendly Monster (alloy for us). Enter the cave to begin the journey through previous dungeons.
??? has the following dungeon levels:
- Maw of Necrogond B1
- Maw of Necrogond B2
- Orochi's Lair B3
- Pyramid B4
- Underground Lake B5
- Maw of Necrogond B6
- Manoza prison cells
At the end of the dungeon you will come to an arena where you will fight Terror Trolls, which is a more powerful version of the Boss Troll from Manoza Castle. After defeating the troll, you will be led into Cloudsgate Citadel, which will now be available as a Zoom/Chimera Wing fast travel mode.
Be sure to explore everything Cloudsgate Citadel. Behind the king you will find the heavenly helm for warriors. In the northeast chamber, you'll find the Bard, who offers three riddles, which are the method of acquiring the second Philosopher's Stone in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. This is just the first of many useful items you'll find here.
How to reach Xenlon:
Once you enter Cloudsgate Citadelyou are very close to Xenlon. In the center of the main chamber you will find a red carpet leading south from the king's throne. At the end of the red carpet you will find a set of stairs leading down to a lower level. Take this set to exit the main chamber. In the next chamber you will find an old man who will offer you a drink if you tell him you are going to Xenlon. It does not appear that this drink has any positive or negative effects.
Take the door in the southwest corner of the room to exit. This will lead to the Citadel Tower. The tower has several floors with quite difficult enemies, so you want to be properly leveled. Realistically, the first time you fight Xenlon, you want to be at least level 50. This is actually low, and it will be difficult, but it is possible. The first time we defeated Xenlon we were at level 58.
Xenlon is at the top of the tower, and you know you're in the right place when you reach a long flight of stairs. Take your time using any consumables and add any items you might want to use to the party's personal inventory. Then let the fun begin.

To get the first wish from Xenlon, you must win in 35 turns or less. After defeating Xenlon, they will keep their word and present a list of what appear to be five possible wishes. But if you look at the bottom of the list, there will be a blank space between the last wish and the end of the text box. If you click down, you'll notice that you can actually highlight the empty space. Choose this as your wish to unlock Trials Temple.
Xenlon will wonder out loud how you even knew about this option, but will still grant the wish. Then they will explain how to find the entrance, which they describe as a “rip in the fabric of reality”.
How to enter the Temple of Trials in Dragon Quest 3 Remake:
Xenlon will explain that to enter the Temple of Trials, you must mount the Ramia Everbird on Aliahan Island and then fly north. This is actually the best way to describe the process.
As you fly out over the sea, you will suddenly see a bright light in the sky. It hovers in place and grows larger as you approach it. If you fly right up to it, you'll see an 'Enter' prompt. Interact with the prompt, and you'll be transported to the Temple of Trials.
The Temple of Trials is a large dungeon made up of five different sections, like the points of a star. At every opportunity you will find a trial. Each attempt has specific rules and rewards. Once you've completed all five trials, you'll unlock the sixth and final trial, which is a battle with Big dragon.
