The 6.4 update for Genshin Impact at the end of February 2026 brings us back into Mondstadt for the first time again in the main story of Genshin Impact since we left to head out to Liyue all that time ago, bringing us back to familiar faces in familiar places.
But it’s also our long-awaited introduction to Varka, the Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius, and the Lupus Majoris Chapter quest associated with his arrival is all about exploring where Varka has been and why he’s been missing from Mondstadt for so long. Here’s what you need to know.
How To Start Varka’s Lupus Majoris Chapter
You’ll need to have reached Adventure Rank 40 and finished the previous section of the Song of the Whelkin Moon quest line from Nod-Krai to begin this quest organically. If not, you can begin Varka’s story chapter as early as Adventure Rank 28 with the Quick Start Focused mode you’ll unlock that permits early access to timed events.
When you first log into Genshin Impact after installing the 6.4 version update, you’ll have a series of events going on in your Events tab, accessible either from the pause menu or your quick access wheel, depending on how you chose to program it. Head into the events and scroll down to the Lupus Majoris Chapter tab here, and confirm your interest in the quest.
Genshin Impact: Things You Can Do In Co-Op Mode
Genshin Impact’s co-op mode allows for you and your friends to explore the gorgeous open world and tackle bosses as a group.
Back in-game, Paimon mentions that you have a letter in the Quest tab in your inventory, so go there and click it to read. It’s Venti summoning you back to Starsnatch Cliff, so to get there quickest, warp over to the Midsummer Courtyard domain and head toward the yellow marker for the quest.
Gales of wind have been put in place by the domain to help you reach Venti faster.
Approach the archon of Mondstadt and trigger a cutscene of your traveler speaking with him. You’ll become acquainted with Lohen during this scene before going back to the city with him, and the scene cuts to Varka and his expedition.
You’ll assume control of Varka for the moment, regardless of whether you’ve managed to pull him from the banner on which he debuted, and this serves as a trial run for the Grand Master as you fight as Varka to defeat a few of the Wild Hunt. Varka is the only one in your party, but you should have no trouble clearing the combat here with his level as it is for the quest.
After the fight, you’ll be told to Face the Wolf Spirit, so approach the glowing blue head, the spirit of Andrius. Watch the cutscene to end this part of the quest.
You”ll be the traveler again when the scene is over, standing back at the Library in Mondstadt with several of the Knights of Favonius. Everyone disperses after the conversation, so go find Jean in her office on the second floor and speak with her. Paimon will urge you to go deliver your letters, so go over to The Angel’s Share, the bar Diluc runs not far from the gates into Mondstadt.
You’ll find several characters here and give them their letters in a cutscene before speaking to Diluc, Kaeya, and Rosaria individually. Diluc and Kaeya are right at the bar, but Rosaria has gone up to the balcony on the second floor, so make time to talk to each character then go to Wolvendom.
The quest marker is right by the Wolvendom teleport waypoint, down by Cider Lake to the southwest of Mondstadt proper, and warping there will start the next scene automatically.
You’ll be ambushed by Wild Hunt monsters as soon as you arrive, so come prepared with a strong team that’s in good condition and be ready to battle. Lohen arrives when you’re finished, and you’ll be made to go deeper into Wolvendom, no matter how creepy it is for the moment.
The next place you’ll need to go is to the trial grounds for the Dominator of Wolves challenge. Even if you’ve already cleared the weekly fight beforehand, you’ll find him here with Razor. Venti appears to give you some background about Lupus Boreas, so listen in to his tale. Razor gives you his Ironclaw imbued with Andrius’ soul for protection, so speak to Venti when you’re ready to leave. Ask him any questions you’ve got before you take off for Nod-Krai.
You’ll ride Dvalin to Nod-Krai and drop into a battle Varka and his Knights are fighting, and watch the cutscene to unlock the tutorial on Abyssal Riftlines (the purple energy beams you’ve seen blocking certain paths in Nod-Krai) and finish this part of the Lupus Majoris Chapter quest in Genshin Impact.
Genshin Impact: Every Playable Character’s Age, Height, And Birthday
We take a look at the age, height, birthday, and background of all Genshin Impact’s playable characters.
The Push Through Nod-Krai
The Meeting And The Set-Up
After the cutscene, you”ll see the quest marker for the next section pop up, instructing you to go to a meeting at the Favonius Keep just up the hill through the gate of where you land. Speak to Varka outside the large tent and opt to wait for the meeting when you’re ready to proceed, but feel free to chat with the other playable characters around the area before you do.
Watch through the cutscene for the meeting of Nod-Krai characters with a handful of familiar Mondstadt faces to learn what your plan is moving forward, then go to the next meeting spot to the northwest of the Pillar of Embla teleport waypoint.
Varka talks about a second seal, one that’s been covered, so you’ll need to remove the Abyss from the area by carefully stringing together the lights here. Reinfuse them and place them carefully in a half-circle around the area to reconnect the node on the far side to the one on the small hill here.
Pay attention to the yellow line of energy, and move the one infused next in line. You’ve got three to work with, so arrange them carefully after imbuing them to make the connection.
How To Command Your Squads
After the cutscene that plays after your obstruction puzzle in the Lupus Majoris Chapter of Genshin Impact, talk to Jahoda just up the hill. When you do, you’ll see that the Logistics Company joined the squad. You’ll be able to click the characters around the map that appears to gather intel, but you’ll need to choose a location to reinforce, one of the glowing red symbols toward the north.
Your squad will then just be the Traveler and Varka, with Varka able to give commands to the team. You’ll have them set up explosives to lob at the Wild Hunt monsters before going to join the fight yourself. Your Traveler has a unique ability for this quest, so use them in conjunction with Varka’s strong Anemo moves to clear the monsters before commanding everyone to retreat when the time comes.
Though enemies will keep spawning, leave the way you entered to blow the enemies away to end this section, with the Lightkeeper Squad joining the squad for command as well at your next waypoint, with the Logistics Company leaving after they’ve served their purpose in the support role here.
Next, go up to the next waypoint north of where you just were for another Wild Hunt fight. Varka will continue fighting with the crews until a monster generator appears, so have him command the team to take it out, and feel free to help in the efforts as well. The fight ends when the generator is destroyed, and you’ll only have one place you’re able to go, so teleport to the next location for the next fight.
Here, you’re in for a somewhat tricky balancing act, responsible for ensuring that Varka commands the squads to either attack or dispel the mist while you’re battling yourself. Push forward until you reach another cutscene assembling the squads for the fight.
Keep watch for the green health bubbles that appear along your path, since you’re without a way to add a healer to your team for the moment but still need to keep Varka going. You can also use food from your inventory to feed him and the traveler during battle as well.
Before the battle, you’ll resume control of Varka and approach the Fragment ahead for another cutscene that leads to an off-screen battle between Varka and “Roland.” Your sword will break after a quick time event we don’t believe you’re meant to pass, and you’ll resume control of Varka as he admits he’s outside reality.
Bittersweet Banners: The Best Characters To Lose Your 50/50 To In Genshin Impact
We don’t really want to lose our 50/50, but some of the fallback options are pretty good in their own right.
The Heart Of The Wolf
Follow the path to the Favonius Sword that opens the pathway ahead, and interact with it to do so. Follow the wolf until you reach a voice-over around the glowing sword, them fight off the Wild Hunt monsters that appear using only Varka. Grab the chest that spawns and use the special skill to interact with the sword again. Interact with the sword one more time before flying onward across the broken bridge.
Varka can easily charge jump with his Elemental Burst over the gaps ahead, so move toward a marked treasure chest to proceed until you’re stopped by the appearance of a wolf. Follow the wolf to the area ahead, being mindful of the steep cliffs here. Your next fight is just ahead, so be ready!
Once again, fend off the Wild Hunt monsters using only Varka and then use his special skill to grab the Wandering Knight’s Longing. Ahead is a strong wind tunnel, and you’ll need to be sure to hide behind the broken wall fragments when the wind is strongest, moving ahead when it lessens momentarily. When you reach the end, you’ll be blown back before the tools you’ve been grabbing help Varka along into the next arena, the heart of the wolf.
Here, you’ll need to diligently follow “Roland” through the area and listen to his long, taunting conversation with Varka. You can’t run here, so watch where “Roland” goes and follow after him. The camera will slow when he’s in your sight, but he may also try to distract you with a red wolf visage, too.
If you lose sight of him in the maze of pillars, you’ll get a waypoint to reorient you; follow it to continue the conversation.
Eventually, he’ll talk about wanting to fight. The arena will change again, and the men will continue to argue. You’ll be prompted with a few quick time events of Varka posing to hear from the other characters from this chapter – Venti, Andrius, and The Captain – before a cartoonish cutscene of Varka back in Mondstadt with the other Knights.
Getting Out Of The Heart In Time
When the cutscene ends, you’ll be tasked with getting Varka back out of the heart of Boreas, a timed sprint back to the start of the dungeon you just crawled through. There are plenty of times when enemies will spawn and try to distract you, and you can fight them if you’d like, but the goal is getting Varka to the next checkpoint, wherever that is ahead.
There’s a point when you’ll come upon a row of wind circles that will push you over a chasm, but be sure to wait for Amber to speak before you jump. She’ll call you back and refocus the camera, which will make you fall into the void and lose valuable time if you’ve gone ahead and jumped toward them before she points them out.
Finish the run through the dungeon, using Varka’s Elemental Attack to jump large distances when necessary. You’ll see another cutscene when you reach the end of the sprint, a rather touching one to bring an end to the Lupus Majoris Chapter quest to introduce Varka more formally in Genshin Impact.
