How Luffy can still improve his Haki, explained

This post contains spoilers for One Piece.

Monkey D. Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and one of the strongest characters in the One Piece. Through his share of opponents, Luffy has become more determined and powerful. In fact, at one point it was almost unthinkable to imagine him losing a fight.

One Piece quietly sets up Luffy's next Haki Power Up

Luffy's next Haki power-up, called Observation Killing, will allow him to reach the level of Shanks.

But the last story about One Piece has introduced several villains who have overwhelmed Luffy in battle, proving that the young pirate still has a ways to go before he can truly be called the strongest character in the series. One of the abilities that Luffy can enhance is his Haki.

Luffy has all three types of Haki

  • Gaban will teach him about another Haki application

In One Piece, there are only a handful of characters that have all three types of Haki, and Luffy is one of them. Surprisingly, Luffy used Conqueror's Haki way before the other two types, which is a sign of his incredible willpower. He learned to use Armament and Observation Haki during the two-year time jump while training with Silver's Rayleigh. The latter also taught him to use Conqueror's Haki without having to rely on overwhelmingly strong emotions.

I don't want to conquer anything. I just think the guy with the most freedom in the whole ocean is the pirate king.

With his training completed, Luffy reunited with his crewmates to continue the journey of finding the One Piece. The rigorous training made him strong enough to beat most enemies he encountered in the New World, but that changed when the young pirate met Charlotte Katakuri, the strongest Sweet Commander of the Big Mom Pirates.

Katakuri could also use all three types of Haki, but he had extraordinary control over Armament and Observation Haki. He could even see the future with his Observation Haki, making it almost impossible to beat him in battle. But Luffy needed to find a way, and he did it through sheer determination and the ability to improve. Luffy awakened Future Sight while enhancing his Weapon Haki, which aided him in his victory.

Luffy's next Haki power-up came in the Wano Country arc, where Hyogoro taught him to use Ryou, which could be used to destroy the target from within. Unfortunately, this was not enough to beat Kaido. Thankfully, Oda gave Luffy the ability to infuse Conqueror's Haki into his attacks. This increased the power of attacks, allowing Luffy to conquer Kaido. After the Wano Country arc, the common belief was that Luffy's Haki had finally peaked. However, that is not true at all.

So far, Luffy has shown that none of his attacks can damage characters possessing regeneration, as evidenced by the Battle of Egghead Island. Luffy tried to hurt Saturn and the other elders several times, but it was to no avail. In fact, the Five Elders had the advantage and would have easily slaughtered the entire Straw Hat Pirates if not for Emet and the Giants. Therefore, Luffy's next Haki power-up must be the one that allows him to bypass the regeneration of the Five Elders, Holy Knights, and Imu.

  • At first it was thought impossible to harm the immortal beings, but Scopper Gaban proved it could be done.

The Pirate King's left man even made it clear that it required Conqueror's Haki. Since Luffy is well versed in using Conqueror's Haki, it shouldn't take long for him to learn how to bypass the regeneration. Once he understands the concept, Luffy will take a huge step towards beating Imu and any other enemies that stand in his way. Some fans may doubt whether Oda will give Luffy the new power-up in Elbaf or not. But the current situation in Elbaf calls for a hero, and Luffy could be it.

Luffy has fought many powerful enemies so far, and he has managed to beat most of them. But his next opponent will not be so easily beaten. Judging by how the story is progressing, it's safe to say that Luffy will be fighting the Holy Knights and Imu in the future. Additionally, he may also have to fight Akainu, who was responsible for killing Ace. Although a situation where the two may cross paths has yet to occur, there is a high probability that will change soon.

One Piece Oda Rival Shanks Haki

One Piece: Oda has already revealed the only man who can rival Shank's Haki

Shanks is a haki master, and only one person can compete with him in One Piece.

There is also a big chance that Luffy will end up against Blackbeard. Both seek the same thing, so it is inevitable that they will fight each other at some point. Currently, Blackbeard has the advantage over Luffy because he has two incredibly overpowered Devil Fruits. While Luffy might be able to handle Gura Gura no Mi, Yami Yami no Mi is a different story. Blackbeard can use his power to thwart the Devil Fruits. So, Luffy has to find a way around it. Needless to say, the fight between them will be amazing.
