Hello Kitty's Kuromi And My Melody to play in the Netflix Stop Motion series

Summary

  • Netflix has shared a teaser for My Melody & Kuromi, coming to the platform in July 2025.

  • The show is stop motion and the Sanrio mascots Kuromi and My Melody are its stars.

  • It is a celebratory project for My Melody and Kuromi's 50th and 20th anniversaries, both of which fall in 2025.

The end of 2024 means that Hello Kitty's 50th anniversary is now over. Don't dwell on it too long, but instead 2025 has brought two more Sanrio milestones. My Melody also turns 50 this year while her friend Kuromi will celebrate her 20th anniversary, and to celebrate the pair will star in their very own stop-motion series on Netflix.

Netflix released the first teaser for My Melody & Kuromi on Thursday, revealing that the project will begin streaming on the platform in July 2025. The teaser is only ten seconds long so it doesn't give much away about the show. Still, it's enough to show that it will revolve around the core of Kuromi and My Melody's somewhat awkward relationship.

My Melody has spent the past 20 years, the entirety of Kuromi's run, believing that she and Kuromi are best friends. However, Kuromi does not share that feeling and believes them to be enemies. The teaser shows a blurry stop motion. My Melody looks so happy that she has hearts in front of her eyes before cutting to Kuromi who, on the other hand, looks appropriately annoyed, sitting in a chair that appears to be modeled after her own design.

Kuromi and my melody get their own Buddy Stop Motion Show

Coming to Netflix in July

Although this will be a first venture into stop motion for Toruku, the studio behind My Melody & Kuromi, Tomoki Misato, the attached director, has previous experience. Misato directed Pui Pui Molcara somewhat bizarre but very entertaining and cute stop-motion series currently on Netflix. I happen to have seen quite a bit of Pui Pui Molcar thanks to my five year old son and it's worth checking out while you wait for My Melody & Kuromi to hit the platform this summer.

My Melody & Kuromi's style looks very similar to the animation style used for Pokemon Concierge. Not only because they are both stop motion, but also because the characters and their surroundings are made of fuzzy cloth. Concierge is also on Netflix and was such a hit that a second season is in the works. That Sanrio wants some of it, and Netflix wants more of it, makes a lot of sense.

Sanrio has kicked off 2025 not only with the reveal of a new Netflix show, but also a whole lot of merch that has already been revealed in the first ten days of the year. Loungefly has released a new Hello Kitty collection featuring the main mascot, the two stars of the new Netflix series and several others from Sanrio's roster.
