Grand Theft Auto 5's Rising Mystery Hunter, Gator Keys, has made a deep dive on the notorious Ratman Urban Myth and explained why players can hear scary laughter in sewers in Los Santos.
Like anyone who has tried to find out the meaning of Mount Chiliad Mural will tell you, GTA is 5 full of strange mysteries and Easter eggs. There are some obvious, that the strange dog Franklin encounters and the ghost found at Mount Gordo, but there are also lots of more unclear urban myths and legends that I bet you didn't know.
Without nowhere, Youtuber Gator Keys has emerged as the main source of GTA 5's many mysteries, which he has regularly been busted in recent months. The latest weirdness that the street keys have dived into is the case with “Ratman” and the creepy laugh that can be heard in part of Los Santo's drain.
Ratman is real in GTA 5, claims the Easter egg hunter
For those who do not know (which I assume, most of you are because this Easter egg is quite subtle), if you enter the maintenance tunnels in central Los Santos, a scary laugh can be heard as you approach a certain part of the drain. It is not really clear why it happens, but it is one of the more unclear Easter eggs found in GTA 5.
In its new video, Gator Keys says that the drain laugh is actually a reference to the GTA 4's Ratman myth that suggests that it is real, and that the laughter can actually be found in the game's files under “Hobo_laugh”. The sound effect only plays when you go up to a very specific grate and cement that it is not a bug or an incorrect audio file.
Gator Keys explains that sound Easter egg is a direct reference to Ratman, a popular myth back on the GTA 4 days thanks to a player who shares a photo of those attacked by a rat in Liberty City's underground. While the photo is very likely false, it became one of the game's biggest myths, and something that Rockstar was certainly aware of.
Real remembers that they were too scared to go into Liberty City's underground station in fear of Ratman …
With that in mind, Gator Keys claims that the creepy laugh that can only be heard on part of the map is a clear nod to the GTA 4's Ratman myth, in the same way that Rockstar did with Bigfoot after San Andreas. Of course, it is less of a mystery that is busted than the entire Mount Chiliad explanation from last week, but it is still an interesting time on a scary as hell Easter egg.
