Golf reporter Lauren Withrow goes viral after embarrassing interview blunder

Vince Young sure looks different these days.

Reporter Lauren Withrow made an epic live television blunder when she conducted an interview with who she believed was the former Texas legend and No. 3 draft pick.

Only it wasn’t Young, the NY Post reports.

Withrow instead interviewed Citadel assistant football coach Everette Sands, telling him about all of Young’s amazing football accolades at the BMW Charity Pro-Am in South Carolina.

“Six seasons in the NFL, probably one of the best NCAA quarterbacks of all time at Texas, started playing golf about four years ago,” Withrow said.

“What is the biggest change you made when you went from the team sport par excellence to the individual sport par excellence?

“Now I apologize,” said Sands, a coach who specializes in offensive skills. “You have the wrong person. I’m Everette Sands. I mean, I’m a football coach. But the beauty of golf is that I’m not just competing against myself, but also against everyone else.”

To Withrow’s credit, he pivoted well.

“This is your first time playing Pro-AM, what’s the best part about being here?” Withrow asked.

“Being here is a great thing,” Sands said. “Having the opportunity to play with some professional golfers is intimidating but also great.”

The interview then ended quickly since, well, Sands is not a national name.

“Good luck this weekend,” Withrow said.

“Hey, I appreciate it,” Sands said.

A video of the embarrassing mistake quickly sent social media into meltdown racking up millions of views.

Sands explained that a misunderstanding in his introduction to Withrow set the interview up for failure, albeit in a comical way.

While Golf Channel aired the interview, PGA Tour Entertainment produced the broadcast, according to a source.

“The young lady came over and said, ‘Vince,’ which I thought was introducing herself to me,” Sands told WCIV. “She said, ‘Can I have an interview after the game? And I said, “Sure.” I started the shot and she came over and started talking about being one of the best quarterbacks in the NCAA and playing for Texas and having a six-year NFL career and I was like, “She thinks I’m Vince Young.” .

“It was a very interesting moment.”

Sands actually met Young later that same day.

“Vince came over and I said, ‘Hey, Vince, how are you? My name is Vince Young,” Sands said. “He just smiled, I said, ‘But let me tell you the story behind all this.’ He had a good laugh.

The Cittadella coach later joked about that moment on X.

“Had a great time at the @BMWProAm today. Today I was even interviewed after one of the holes!!!” Sands posted a video containing a clip of the interview.

On Thursday, Sands teamed up with another star college quarterback, Ryan Leaf, who really liked the situation.

“I was with @EveretteSands as his playing partner in the @BMWCharityProAm today and I don’t know if he could have been a more generous and patient person with this crazy/giant mistake,” Leaf posted. “@CitadelFootball has a great coach!!

Withrow took the mistake in stride, writing on her Instagram Story, “Learn from mistakes,” in a post showing her mistakes from the day.

Maybe he can actually interview Young on Friday.
