After renewed rumors of a new God of War game from Sony Santa Monica, some fans are speculating that it's actually an Atreus spin-off instead of a Kratos game.
The past few weeks have been some of the most exciting God of War fans have had in a long time. Sons of Sparta might not be everyone's favorite game in the series, but it still created a nice shadow drop alongside the announcement of a God of War trilogy remake from Sony Santa Monica that is in early development.
That's not all Sony Santa Monica is working on, though, as we know its other team is well into development on another title, which could even be revealed this summer. Most people seem to agree that it's likely to be a new entry in the God of War franchise, but despite Christopher Judge accidentally hinting that he'll be in, not everyone thinks it'll be about Kratos.
Some God Of War fans believe that the next game will feature Atreus, and I totally agree with that
God of Mischief would be such a cool spinoff
After all the rumors about a new God of War game (widely believed to be in Egypt, though most leaks suggest it's Kratos), Redditor Demetrius96 shared his thoughts on the God of War subreddit. In their post, they point out that all the rumblings so far lead them to believe that the next game is actually an Atreus spinoff, which they're coining God of Mischief.
Demetrius96 has a lot of evidence for his theory, including the fact that Cory Barlog said that Atreus leaving at the end of Ragnarok had to happen, and that the story of who blew the horn (a very Atreus-centric plot) would be resolved in another game. Ragnarok director Eric Williams has also previously said that it was purposeful not to give Atreus a melee weapon, and that it had to be “earned”.
The big piece of evidence supporting the theory is that Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier previously said that Cory Barlog's next game isn't a new IP but “may feel like one,” which some are taking as a hint that it's an Atreus (or rather Loki) game that plays a little differently than the usual Kratos fare.
While you might think Christopher Judge's potential involvement shortchanges this theory, it's worth noting that Kratos would absolutely still have a role to play in an Atreus game, even if he wasn't the main star. The theory is getting quite a bit of attention on the subreddit, and many fans agree that it sounds plausible, although not everyone wants it to be true.
Atreus certainly has his fans (including me), but he's nowhere near as popular as Kratos is. In my opinion, this may be exactly why Sony Santa Monica is also remaking the classic trilogy, to give old-school God of War fans something to look forward to while also taking the series in a different direction with Atreus.
