Genshin Impact Anime Still In Work At Ufotable, Studio Confirms

Genshin Impact developer MiHoYo and animation studio Ufotable announced a Genshin Impact anime adaptation in 2022, causing excitement in the Genshin community. However, there have been no progress updates since the announcement, leading fans to worry that the project had been quietly shelved.

This seemed especially likely when Ufotable announced in July that the workload to produce Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle had become so great that staff were being pulled from other projects and redirected to Demon Slayer.

However, those worries were put to rest at Genshin FES 2026, as MiHoYo gave an update on the anime. According to Genshin's battle designer Aquaria, customization is progressing at a steady pace, and no unforeseen issues have arisen during production.

The announcement video specifically stated that the adaptation was a “long-term project,” meaning that Ufotable is likely still on schedule with the project. The video didn't tell much about the story of the anime, focusing mostly on scenery and a couple of characters.

Aquaria also apologized for what he perceives as a low cadence of updates for Genshin in recent months, explaining that everyone on the team works in a “four-dimensional” way, multitasking (thanks, Rachii_Chan).

“Speaking of which, I'd like to apologize to everyone,” Aquaria explained. “Why? Because some of you have probably seen feedback like “Hey, Genshin! What the hell are you doing?” Many improvements, including some better design improvements, only came in later versions. Why didn't we release them earlier? You might think that the development team is not pushing themselves to the limit and that many of our voices have not been very responsive.”

Is this the year of Genshin Impact?

Many of the complaints you see from the community on social media are about game balance, especially the balance of older characters. In a game as expansive and as regularly updated as Genshin Impact, older characters can sometimes become “irrelevant” in the metagame.

“Well, everyone works in this four-dimensional way after all. Where it feels like 'I'll do yours, finish yours, then do yours, finish yours, do yours' kind of feeling,” Aquaria continued. “It is true that sometimes we are not sensitive when it comes to time. For this, I would like to say sorry, sorry. But rest assured! I will definitely go back and immediately push our team working in this four-dimensional space.”

Genshin Impact version 6.3 is expected to start on January 14th.
