GameStop's Game of the Year Awards have the most bizarre categories and winners

The Game Awards are just hours away, but no one cares because GameStop has already announced the winners of its Game of the Year show… event… digital marketing campaign? The dealership holds this event every year, but unlike Geoff Keighley's version, it's mostly for laughs.

It features some ridiculous categories and even more ridiculous winners, showing that the gaming industry needs a few laughs, especially considering how tough the year has been. While not all of the awards are necessarily game-related, they're all pretty fun, like the Best GameStop Store of the Year or “The Game I Only Had Time to Put More Than 2 Hours Into Because I Was Busy of the Year Award”.

Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour is GameStop's worst game of the year

Halo 3 - Master Chief and Arbiter Key Art.

While Worst Game of the Year isn't an award most people hand out, no one is arguing with GameStop for awarding it to the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour. The worst reviewed Nintendo game in ten years has earned it for being a standalone “game” that should ideally have been a demo included with Switch 2.

On the other hand, the retailer has awarded its Game of the Year award to Halo 3, which came out relatively recently in 2007. It looks like GameStop wasn't too impressed with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. However, Sandfall Interactive's game won GameStop PlayStation Game of the Year, so it's not all bad.

Moving on to some of the crazier awards, GameStop's Trade Anything Day created quite a buzz as customers traded in anything they could find for store credit. However, it was an easy win for taxidermy bobcat, who won the GameStop Trade of the Year award. We hope to see more from bobcat in the years to come.

The Nintendo Switch 2 welcome tour isn't made for you, it's made for your parents

It should have been free, but the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour is still worth its asking price.

Hades 2 had almost no competition when it came to “The game I only had time to spend more than 2 hours on because I was busy all year.” Looks like I didn't play it right because somehow I put 122 hours into it. Again, I'm a casual gamer.

And if you had any doubts, GameStop also awarded GameStop the GameStop Game Store of the Year award. Truly deserved.
