Final Fantasy 13 Cast Hosted PlayStation State Of Play Remaster Rumors Resurface

The Final Fantasy 13 trilogy is arguably the most polarizing entry in Final Fantasy history. It comfortably has the lowest Metacritic user score of the series, at 6.3, and is often the subject of low rankings on critically curated lists. Those who like the trilogy really like it.

Final Fantasy 2 is the second lowest rated game, with a Metacritic user score of 6.5, and the original Final Fantasy is the third lowest, with a score of 6.9.

Despite its mixed reception, the title remains one of the hardest games to play on modern consoles. It is, and always has been, available on PC, and it can be played on Xbox via its backwards compatibility services. However, it has not been available on the PlayStation since the PS3, and it has never been playable on a Nintendo console.

While soft rumors of a remaster have been circulating for a while now, Final Fantasy 13 fans think we have the best clue yet that a re-release is coming, and they think it could be announced soon, with one of the game's cast members hosting an upcoming PlayStation State of Play.

There have been frequent rumblings of a Final Fantasy 13 Remaster, naturally to mixed receptions, but Square Enix decided to postpone things last year. In response to composer Alex Moukala, who suggested that “Final Fantasy XIII needs a remaster”, the developers said, “Any reason for a remaster instead of a remake?” An innocuous question, but one that got the wheels turning.

Yesterday, PlayStation announced a new State of Play, “curated for players in Japan and Asia,” with the event MC'd by actor Yuki Kaji. Kaji has had dozens of roles in TV, anime, and video games, including Eren Yeager in Attack on Titan, Shoto Todoroki in My Hero Academia, and Link in the original Hyrule Warriors game, but one role has turned heads (thanks, Genki). Kaji played Hope in Final Fantasy 13, and there is hope that his appearance at this showcase will herald the announcement of a potential Final Fantasy 13 Remaster.

“Am I being blueballed here thinking FF13 is getting a spotlight? Because it's working,” HonkaiMain said on Twitter. “Don't give me hope that we'll finally get the FF13 collection,” Stu added. The discussions also continued elsewhere.

Given PlayStation's closeness to the Final Fantasy series, with Remake, Rebirth and 16 all launching as exclusives, and the fact that this showcase is aimed at Japanese players, it seems as good a time as any to announce a remaster. It's worth keeping your expectations in check, though, because it could simply be the company getting an actor who's massive in the aforementioned region to host its showcase.
