It is not a clear deal, but many Final Fantasy 14 players fear the real opportunity that the game's next expansion will not be launched until 2027 – three years after Dawntrail, which has proven to be nothing if not consistent among society.
If this turns out to be the case, and unless much more content is packed in the rest of Dawntrail's life than we have seen from the latter parts of previous extensions, we may be looking at a relative content dryer at a time when FF14 could really use a shot in the arm.
Fretting over fanfests
The deduction '27 has had a number of roots in recent months, but the latest is also the largest – Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest, which will have its regular North American, European and Japanese arenas during the course of 2026, will not end its third and final outing until 1 November.
Square Enix announced the dates (by the way, good luck getting a ticket) early tomorrow, and as you can see there is a spring/summer/autumn vibe to everything:
Interestingly, the North American site has shifted from Las Vegas, Nevada to Anaheim, California. Even more important is that the spread between the three events is quite wide; This is not new with fanfests, but it Suggests that 8.0 will not be launched until the end of 2026 at the earliest. Leaving early 2027 the more likely, albeit in no way inevitable.
If Dawntrail 7.4 and 7.5 are not allowed to broaden release cycles with significant content, this will be a heck of a drought. Player bills have lost more than usual when the phase after launch continues, so while I generally avoid “doomposting” in the form of news articles, I think I wonder how everything will shake out, do you know?
Large spots for FF14's enlargements usually come to five in total each time. Since we have already had three concerns about a lack of new content. On the other hand, if Fan Fest date turns out to be misleading, and 8.0 editions before they are all done, it's all a moot point.
As a reference, Final Fantasy 14's fifth expansion was launched on July 2, 2024. This was two years and seven months after Endwalker, which was particularly far in its own right. If – and I don't suggest there is any standard pattern for everything, but If – 8.0 comes out at an identical rate, which would get stuck for February 2027. Twist here is of course that Endwalker was certainly better received than Dawntrail, which has got a more broken overall game basis. In order not to speak for everyone, but enough negativity swirls around FF14 lately that it would swell to see a faster cadence.
We'll see how things shake out. 8.0 is supposed to focus more on job identity, which would be welcome news if it panins properly, as there has been some real apathy in recent years against perceived homogenization over each Roll's guard list. I share that feeling, so I would like to see a more versatile package go forward.
