This week's Game Awards featured plenty of exciting game reveals for titles that will make up the next few years of game releases. Some, like Highguardis just around the corner, while others, like Exodusis a little further away. But the good news is that a title that many thought wouldn't be released until 2030 at the earliest is coming sooner than that.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was one of the biggest titles revealed during The Game Awards 2025. Its existence was a well-kept secret heading into the Geoff Keighley-produced show, and it wasn't until the title card appeared in full that fans in the audience (and watching online) went crazy. And then, when it was revealed that the original Knights of the Old Republic director Casey Hudson is working on the project, enthusiasm shot through the roof.
Of course that enthusiasm for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic eventually tempered when fans realized that the game is likely in early development and won't be released for at least a few years. How far along the game is and when it plans to release is unclear, but Bloomberg's Jason Schreier believes the game won't hit until 2030, and that's an “optimistic” guess on his part.
It's reasonable to assume that a game of Fate of the Old Republic's scope and scale would take a long time to develop, and the 2030 release year makes sense. It's disappointing that gamers have to wait so long to experience the next chapter in the Old Republic franchise, but that's what many of these Game Awards trailers do: they build hype for projects that are very early on. Or at least, that's what we thought.
Casey H
udson says Fate of the Old Republic will be released earlier
While not citing Schreier's reporting directly, Casey Hudson took to social media to say that Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic won't require such a long wait. He says the game will be out before 2030 and jokes that he's “not getting any younger.”
Given the development timelines and trends we've seen on similar projects The fate of the old republicSchreier's expectations for a 2030 release year make sense. It's unclear if he has any sources that painted a picture of where the game is in development and its release target, but with only a CG trailer to show, the assumption is reasonable. And Schreier is optimistic because he knows the reality of game development, where even the most conservative plans can sometimes fall apart as a project progresses. Just watch Grand Theft Auto 6s journey to landing the launch date tells all there is to know about the reality of delivering a big-budget triple-A game.
It feels a bit like splitting hairs when it comes down to it Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republics release date though. The game likely won't be released in 2027, otherwise there would have been a date on the trailer. That means 2028 is the earliest we could see the game, and that still feels generous. So 2029 might be where Casey Hudson's studio, Arcanaut Studios, is looking.
Only time will tell when Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is released and who is “right” about when the game will ship. Even then, Casey Hudson and the development team likely have every intention of getting the game into players' hands as soon as possible, but that doesn't mean there won't be any roadblocks to release.
