With all the happenings on and around Christmas, including the penultimate set of Stranger Things episodes, plus catching up on all of this year's Game of the Year contenders, it's easy to forget that Season 2 of Amazon Prime's live-action adaptation of Fallout is also happening every week.
Already one of the highest-rated projects this year, Season 2 of Fallout is shaping up to be another all-timer when it comes to video game adaptation. So much so that fans are once again wondering a simple question: Where the hell is a new Fallout game?
Fallout was never Bethesda's, and it's time for someone else to take over
Bethesda once took over Fallout from Interplay, and it's time for a new developer to do the same.
The Fallout universe is too rich for everyone to wait for Bethesda
Taking to Reddit, fans of the series are baffled that, despite its success, the only title still receiving updates is the highly divisive Fallout 76.
“Literally the easiest bag of money they could ask for,” one person wrote in part. “(I don't know) why they didn't plan to exploit that. I know it's unreasonable to quickly make a game out of thin air, but I feel like this could have been planned.”
That's a pretty fair assessment, especially when you consider that on the other end Sony managed to pump out an entire Until Dawn remake to coincide with the very bad film. Again, both Devil May Cry and Splinter Cell received anime adaptations and neither is in line for new entries.
“We've been waiting 11 years mate,” wrote another. “Welcome to the club.”
That club seems to get more crowded with each passing week as more and more people realize how incredible the world of Fallout is only to find out how inaccessible its games are.
That's because if you're on either a Switch or PlayStation, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, both of which are considered the pinnacle of the franchise, aren't available to you.
“They should do mainline games every 5 years even if the tech leaps aren't as big,” wrote another fan.
As it stands, Todd Howard claimed that Season 3 of the show is in the works, and that Bethesda wants to add elements of the show to its games. It's unclear when Season 3 will be released, and given that Bethesda has yet to release The Elder Scrolls 6, any shared continuity could be years away from being realized, something Howard had previously confirmed.
However, there is hope, if only a glimmer. Earlier this month, Howard acknowledged the potential remasters for Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but didn't give much more than that.
“We understand, right? We see all these comments,” Todd told Dexerto. “We're working on a whole bunch of things. And we're looking forward to the day we can reveal them.”
Hopefully that day will come soon and fast because these fans, myself included, are hungry for new content.
