Fallout 76 sets the stage for a terrifying evolution of FEV

Fallout 76 may have gotten off to a rough start at launch, but it's become one of the most interesting entries in the franchise over the years. Thanks to a variety of updates, Fallout 76 has come a long way. From expanding the map to adding features like fishing and the ability to become a Ghoul, Fallout 76 have had a lot of fun with the lore of the series.

One of many ways that Bethesda's Fallout 76 developers have had fun exploring and developing the knowledge is through the introduction of new creatures that have not been seen in others Fall-out games, while showcasing some that have already appeared. There are many different monsters in it Fallout 76 that are unique to the game's Appalachian region, and they can be downright terrifying. Mothman and the Grafton Monster are some of the most notable. Also, Bigfoot was recently added in The Backwoods update. One particularly disruptive creature mark, however, happens to be Floaters. These are not exclusive to Fallout 76but the game has its own unique variation of the monster. Floaters may not be as remarkable as Appalachia's famous cryptids, but they are a terrifying example of what the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV) can do.

12 Most Bizarre Vaults in Fallout History

The bunkers in Fallout, known as vaults, are a huge part of the franchise, and there are several strange and bizarre vaults that players will encounter.

Fallout 76's Floaters are one of the most bizarre results of FEV experiments

IN Fall-out lore, FEV is one of the most infamous pre-war experiments that ended with long-lasting consequences. The artificial virus was originally created by West-Tek, but was later experimented on at the Mariposa military base. The FEV is what created super mutants, but they are far from the only creatures that have come from the virus and its ability to mutate DNA. Iconic Fall-out monsters like Deathclaws and Centaurs are also byproducts of FEV, and Floaters are a small part of that list. Fall-outs FEV is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle in franchise history. While many details about the Floaters are still sparse, they are both a fascinating and frightening display of the unpredictable nature of the FEV.

Where do floats come from?

Fallout 76The Appalachian wasteland holds plenty of unsolved mysteries, and the origins of the Floaters have never really been addressed. The creature also appears in the first Fall-out and Fallout 2but the two games never reveal any clear answers about their genesis either. At least they've been confirmed to be the product of FEV experiments, so the Floaters are more than likely part of West-Tek's pre-war shenanigans as well.

An essential part of Fallout 76 lore is that West-Tek purposefully contaminated Huntersville's water supply with FEV. If FEV spread to other water sources, wildlife would inevitably be at risk. With the Floaters' bulbous blue-crowned heads and amphibious appearance, it wouldn't be surprising if the creatures descended from frogs or some sort of fish. Of course, this is just speculation, as it is not confirmed in-game. Of all Fall-outs biggest mysteries, the origin of the Floaters isn't exactly at the top of the list. However, it is a really exciting thread to follow.

There are three main types of Appalachian floats

  • Flamers – These types are red or orange and use fire attacks.
  • Freezing – Freezers are blue and have cryogenic abilities.
  • Gnashers – These utilize acid or melee attacks and are green.

Below are spoilers for Fall-out Season 2.

Fallout 76's Floaters would be a wild addition to the Fallout TV series

Fall-out Season 2 took The Ghoul, Lucy and Maximus on an exciting new journey, but one of the most fascinating revelations of the eight-episode season was with Norm's arc. Norm finds evidence of FEV, making it the first time the live-action series has acknowledged the virus. This reveal, combined with a cameo from Ron Perlman as a super mutant, seems to plant the seeds of FEV playing a much bigger role in Season 3's story.

Of course, Fall-out Season 3 will probably focus more on the FEV being responsible for the Deathclaws and Super Mutants, but getting a glimpse of a Floater would be really wild. There are a lot of questions that the second season left hanging in the air, but it was made abundantly clear that The Ghoul is headed to Colorado to hopefully find his family. This is obviously incredibly far from Appalachia, but the Floater variety from Fall-out and Fallout 2 may still appear. Since they are also found on the west coast, the creatures potentially floating over to the Rockies aren't too outlandish. There's even the possibility that Colorado has its own terrifying brand of Floaters. The Fall-out the series takes place almost 200 years after Fallout 76so there's no telling how much further they've evolved in that time.

Fall-outThe third season will likely take place mostly in Colorado, but it's possible that season 4 could take the gang to Appalachia. Last year's Burning Springs update officially added The Ghoul as a prize-giving NPC, so a future season could definitely hint at his time in the region.

Fall-out has only teased bits of Colorado in the story, and that's what makes Season 3's trip to the area so compelling. The Fall-out the show now has the opportunity to play with an even greater sense of freedom. This could really affect gameplay going forward, so it will be fascinating to see how the show's writers handle an area that is practically a blank slate.

From now on, floaters are just terrifying floating mysteries

It cannot be said about Fallout 76 will reveal more about Floaters along the way. On the one hand, it's pretty fun to speculate and theorize about what they might have been before FEV took hold. But their mysterious nature can also be a bit frustrating. Regardless, they are very convincing, even if they are disgusting and scary. With its early place in the timeline, Fallout 76 has the power to affect the entire franchise. With hope for that Fallout 5the release date is not as far as many expect, it will be exciting to see if any of the Fallout 76s monster makes its way into the next game.
