You can get Codsworth as a companion at the beginning of the game. You can do this by completing the second story mission, called “Out of Time”. After leaving Vault 111, where you appear at the beginning of the game, head to your old home Sanctuary Hills. Here you will see Codsworth patiently waiting nearby. Talk to him and he will express his concern at your absence and ask about the state of the Commonwealth. Then keep talking to him until the “Come with me” dialog appears. Say it, and the robot will become your constant companion.
By getting Codsworth as a companion, you get not only a robot that knows your name, but also a loyal friend with high moral principles. It won't just follow you around and repeat your name; Codsworth will be an extremely useful, indispensable companion to help you in both adventure and battle.
