Fable is coming to PS5 at launch

A major new rumor suggests that a major upcoming Xbox exclusive will be coming to the PlayStation 5 at launch, with Fable reportedly planned to debut on the Sony console. Xbox looks set to have a big year ahead for first-party releases, with some major franchises already confirmed for 2026. The gaming brand is expected to pull out all the stops in 2026, with beloved series such as Halo, Gears of Warand Forza everyone gets new games throughout the year. However, one of Microsoft's most notable plans for 2026 comes with the revival of the Fable franchise.

Fable was once a staple of the Xbox franchise, with Lionhead Studios-developed RPGs a mainstay of the first two consoles. Microsoft and Lionhead debuted the first Fable to rave reviews in 2004, with many fans praising the game's combat system and the depth of its main story and side missions. Lionhead released two more major sequels Fable 2 and Fable 3 along with several spin-offs, although the franchise has fallen completely dormant since the 2017 card game Fable Fortune. Now, Fable makes its long-awaited return with a new game and a surprise arrival to another platform.

Although it will probably be radically different, Fable should consider taking inspiration from Red Dead and GTA for an important feature.

Fable may launch simultaneously on PS5

During a recent episode of the VGC Podcast, VGC Editor-in-Chief and gaming insider Andy Robinson shared some surprising news about the new Fable. According to Robinson, Fable is currently slated for a “day and date” release on PS5 alongside the Xbox version, with Sony fans also getting to experience the return of the franchise. He says that developer Playground Games has been looking at a release for the game on PS5, while the podcast also mentioned Forza Horizon 6 not launching at the same time on PS5. Microsoft and Playground Games have yet to confirm a firm release date for Fablebeyond its current launch window of 2026.

Fables planned release later this year is about the fact that much about the RPG is still a mystery to fans. Microsoft and Playground have shown very little of Fables gameplay via their official channels, with trailers that only provide snippets of the world and gameplay players can expect. Fans won't have to wait much longer to learn all about the latest entry in the beloved franchise, with Fable get a deep dive into the game during Microsoft's upcoming Xbox Showcase in January. The game's story has also been briefly teased through official trailers, with Fable is confirmed to be a reboot of the franchise.

Fable joins several Xbox exclusives coming to PS5

Fable coming to the PS5 will be the latest entry in a growing trend of exclusive Microsoft products making the jump to the Sony console. Microsoft made waves in 2025 when the developer brought two of its biggest previously exclusive franchises to the PS5 for the first time, with Gears of War: Reloaded and Forza Horizon 5. Microsoft has confirmed that the PS5 wave will continue into 2026 with more gamer exclusives coming to Sony's platforms for the first time, including arguably the Xbox developer's biggest exclusive in Halo. Microsoft also recently confirmed that the Xbox exclusive RPG Avowed coming to PS5 in February.

While many of Xbox's exclusives are making the PS5 transition, a former Sony exclusive will also be coming to Xbox and Switch 2 in January, with Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade finally set to launch on Microsoft console. Xbox is set to make 2026 one of its biggest years yet, preparing to launch a slew of high-profile games.
