Fable's protagonist will not have a set gender, just like in Fable 2 and 3. This was confirmed in the Xbox Developer Direct deep dive, which gave us a look at our customization options.
This comes after Fable became yet another culture war target for using a female protagonist in its marketing to date. This led some to believe that the player character would be a woman, with no option to play as a man. Of course, this meant that the regular audience cried “woke”, even though the female solo protagonist had not been confirmed.
You can choose the type of hero you play as in the new fable
In today's demo, we saw how players will be able to choose between different builds to customize the protagonist's appearance.
“In Fable, you'll be able to choose from a variety of character heads,” one of the developers told us. “You can customize your clothes, hair, skin tone, tattoos and scars, so that the hero you play represents you.”
This is a huge improvement over the customization options in the original games. In the first fable, you could only play as a man, and the only things you could change were his hair and clothes – although there would be some other changes depending on your build and morale. While Fable 2 let you play as a woman, you still couldn't change much. In fact, this will be the first Fable game that allows us to change the lead's skin tone.
