Games like No man's heaven and Star field brag about the ability to venture into the unknown and discover new worlds, but narratively driven stories have always been naughty dog's bread and butter. Uncharted and The Last of Us Used the environments within their respective stories to further build up Lore, especially with regard to the latter.
Although it is not an open world setting, The last of us Make their environment as integrated into history as the characters' interaction and dialogue. When you ride through abandoned houses and sneak around in crumbling skyscrapers, collectibles that sprinkle with these areas tell their own smaller stories within the larger story. From the humorous to the pure heartbreaking, find something as simple as a paper in The last of us Games can highlight how others have survived, or failed after the Cordyceps outbreak.

Intergalactic will surely carry the last of us torch
On the surface, both The last of us and Intergalactic is extremely different, but the latter seems founded to continue the former tradition of expanding its lore through the environment. The last of us Is extremely detailed, even when it comes to small things, which makes the world feel much more rich. Then Intergalactic Is based on a fictional planet, this gives Naughty Dog the opportunity to have even more fun with its environmental stories, as it can be an effective way to really paint a picture of how life is outside Sempiria's course.
Even more fascinating, as Sempiria probably has not made contact outside in over 600 years, this can offer an incredibly oblique view of the larger universe. Because of the planet's isolated nature, citizens who live on the planet may have used to create legends about what lies beyond Sempiria, which can be a convincing turn for the story.
