Eiichiro Oda's honest editor changed Luffy's appearance forever and here is why

Luffy was no exception, as the main character in A bit had to undergo a significant change. While Oda chose to draw Luffy with a simple character design, a Young and honest editor came a comment that changed Luffy forever.

Eiichiro Oda often changes Lffy's look to fit the setting, but he remains directly recognizable regardless of the story. His youthful face, along with his big black eyes, gives him a sad and easily accessible look. However, it was not the original plan, as ODA's early draft disturbed its editor because of Lffy's scary appearance.

In an article published on the Japanese website Toyo Keizai 2024, it was revealed that ODA had to change Luffy's appearance due to the comments from this editor.

Apparently the young editor said to Oda that Luffy's facial expression was “too scary” When he saw his manuscript. This got Oda to adapt Lffy's design, which probably gave him a friendlier and more happy look without losing his large and bold personality. The funny thing is that the young editor thought he insulted Oda with his comment, because the creator of a piece did not contact him for a whole day.

Eventually, ODA changed Luffy's design according to the editor's proposal. Without this honest comment from the editor, fans may have received another luffy, someone who is less easily accessible and youthful. However, it would have been interesting to see an alternative version of Luffy, where he scares and even a little threatening, even when he is not angry.
