Yesterday it was announced that Sony made the decision to shut down Bluepoint gameand God of war creator David Jaffe sounds the alarm for Xbox to step in. Over the years, Bluepoint Games has built a reputation as one of Sony's favorite studios for great remasters and remakes, which makes the closure that much more surprising.
Two of Bluepoint Games most notable works are remakes of Shadow of the Colossus during 2018 and Demon's Soulswhich launched in 2020. Both remakes were met with praise from critics and players alike. In addition to these remakes, Bluepoint Games was responsible for developing God of War collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Uncharted: Nathan Drake Collectionand Gravity Rush Remastered. Sony shutting down Bluepoint Games is unexpected, and David Jaffe is hoping Xbox gets in on the act.
God of War creator David Jaffe wants Xbox to buy Bluepoint games
Jaffe took to Twitter shortly after the announcement to raise the idea that Microsoft Gaming boss Phil Spencer would save Bluepoint Games from closing. He even tagged Spencer directly in the post. At the end of the tweet, Jaffe summed up his appeal by saying, “This is not hard. Do NOT let this great team fall apart.” Phil Spencer is one of the most powerful members of Microsoft Gaming, so deciding to buy Bluepoint is definitely not impossible. However, that also seems unlikely, especially after the controversial years that Microsoft Gaming has had.

Microsoft has also canceled games and shut down studios
In recent years, several games developed under the Microsoft Gaming umbrella have suddenly been canceled. Halting production on a number of games was shocking enough, but a variety of studios were also shut down along with these projects. In 2024, Microsoft shut down Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, and Alpha Dog Games. Tango Gameworks was eventually bought by Krafton, but the latter two studios were not so lucky. Last year, under development Everwild and the long-awaited Perfectly dark the re-recording was interrupted. Perfectly darks developer, The Initiative, was even shut down as a result of the cancellation. When responding to other Twitter users, Jaffe even mentioned it Perfectly dark could be a good game for Bluepoint Games to take on as their next project.
Microsoft's controversial layoffs in recent years have sparked a lot of backlash. Many responses to Jaffe's tweet were quick to point out Microsoft's recent track record of mass layoffs. Now, this trend doesn't mean Microsoft wouldn't consider buying Bluepoint Games, it just makes it a less likely scenario. With Microsoft's launch of Muse, a generative AI model “capable of generating game visuals,” there is growing concern that these layoffs are part of potential plans to invest more in AI-assisted video game development. If so, buying Bluepoint Games is probably even less possible.
Right now it is unclear what will happen to the team at Bluepoint Games. Another company coming in and buying the famous developer is definitely not off the table at the moment, but it would be surprising. Regardless of what happens, the legacy of Bluepoint Games will live on as a bright spot in the industry. Remastering and remaking games is no easy feat. The new life that Bluepoint Games was able to breathe Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls was really impressive. They are still some of the best video game remakes of all time. The news of Sony's closure is still fresh, so the story is still unfolding. It would be great if Bluepoint Games could find a new home with the Xbox, but based on Microsoft's recent moves, that's probably an unlikely outcome.
