‘Do better’: Rowland’s message to media outlets following Darren Wick allegation

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland has encouraged all media outlets to “do better” in handling internal complaints, after allegations emerged that former Nine Network news chief Darren Wick had acted inappropriately towards a member of the female staff.

Mr Wick, Channel Nine’s recently departed head of news and current affairs, left the network on March 15 after a colleague made a formal complaint against him.

Responding to the allegations on Sunday, Rowland said all media companies must adhere to internal policies in dealing with allegations of bad behavior in the workplace.

“The media sector has been highlighted in recent years as an area that needs improvement, I say this as someone who works in a profession where standards also need to be high,” Ms Rowland told Sky News.

“That it is up to all institutions, all companies, including the one in question, to do better, to be transparent in how they conduct their investigations.

“We want good people to come into the industry to support the fourth estate which is an important pillar of our democracy and I hope that appropriate processes are key here.”

Nine Entertainment chief executive Mike Sneesby, who cut short a US holiday to deal with the matter, has since urged Nine employees to come forward with any complaints about inappropriate behaviour.

“Many of you over the past few days will have seen external media drawing attention to our internal processes and policies relating to workplace conduct complaints,” Sneesby wrote in an internal email.

“It is important that everyone at Nine knows that we do not tolerate inappropriate behavior in the workplace and we want to know if inappropriate behavior occurs, so it can be addressed promptly.”

In an interview on Sky News this week, an anonymous on-air personality on Nine claimed Mr Wick had sexually harassed her at the Logie Awards.

“On the dance floor at the Gold Coast Logies afterparty he was groping, his hands were everywhere, he was breathing heavily in my ear, I had to get him off me,” she said.

“Any other man I might have kicked or pushed, but he was my boss.”

Mr Wick had been with the network for more than 25 years.
