Larian finally revealed Divinity at The Game Awards earlier today. In Geoff Keighley's own words, it will be even “bigger than Baldur's Gate 3”. The studio is clearly excited about the upcoming game, as evidenced by that statue in the desert that everyone was speculating about. While we don't have any other information about the game, we might have an idea about the starting area.
Larian loves to start games on the beaches. In Baldur's Gate 3, Divinity: Original Sin, and its sequels, the game begins with the protagonist waking up on a beach after a short prologue on a ship of some kind. Fans of the studio fully expect Larian to do the same with Divinity, but a now-deleted tweet by studio head Swen Vincke may have just confirmed it.
Divinity: On The Beach
As seen by magur76 on Reddit, Vincke tweeted a picture of a beach yesterday, with the caption, “Remains one of my favorite running spots. Lots of memories here.” Of course, the studio head might just love running on that particular beach and have fond memories of it, but fans think it might have been a cheeky reference to Larian's tradition of starting his games on a beach.
The comments did not disappoint, knowing what this could mean. “I love that every Larian game starts on a beach! It's as iconic as starting a game as a prisoner in TES,” said one fan.” Another said: “I won't believe it until I see it, a beach in a Larian game wouldn't make sense.”
There is no particular reason for this, but after three games it has become a tradition for the studio. Perhaps the developers feel that a beach, being a relatively open place, is a good way for the player to get used to the movement and exploration. Or maybe Vincke made a deal with a beach god to ensure the studio's success, and this was the price.
Considering the caption and how Vincke had “lots of memories” on that beach, maybe it's his way of putting something personal into every game he works on.
