Season 11 of Diablo 4 is just around the corner and launches on December 11, 2025. Season 11, called the Season of Divine Intervention, will introduce major new threats, changes to mechanics such as Masterworking, the Tower, the Divine Gift's seasonal mechanic, and more, shaking things up even more Diablo 4s ARPG sandbox.
One of the most important additions to Diablo 4 in Season 11 is actually more of a retribution: Azmodan, one of the Seven Lesser Evils and an antagonist to Diablo 3will join the fray. Known as the Lord of Sin, Azmodan is a grotesque, spider-like demon who played a major role in the Sin War and other conflicts within Hell. He also launched a disastrous invasion of Sanctuary and appears to be doing so again with his demonic relatives in Diablo 4 Season 11.
Azmodan's Lore and Role in Diablo 4 Season 11, Explained
Azmodan's early history and fight against the main evils
When Tathamet, the second being that ever existed, was killed by the first being that ever existed, Anu, each of his seven heads were transformed and turned into unholy gods known as the Lesser Evils. They are “lesser” only in the sense that they are individually weaker than the first three evils; they are still immensely powerful by earthly standards.
After the Prime Evils' attempts to win humanity's loyalty during the Sin Wars, the Lesser Evils became dismayed and disillusioned, fearing that the Primes were becoming distracted and cowardly in their war against Heaven. Azmodan worked with Diablo's Belial, another of the Lesser Evils, to overthrow the Prime Evils and banish them to Sanctuary, the deadly planet in the game's universe. The pair's main goals were twofold: to gain greater control of Hell for themselves and start a proxy conflict between the Primes and the forces of Heaven in Sanctuary, thus leaving Heaven's gates open to attack.
Azmodan and Belial were successful, but would soon turn on each other and plunge Hell into yet another civil war. Azmodan would have a significant advantage over his opponent for a long time, but they eventually landed on some semblance of peace, and set their sights on mortality again. Hungry for greater power, and not just over Hell, Azmodan launched an invasion of Sanctuary.
Azmodan's role in Diablo 3
Banished to the Sanctuary and unable to manifest corporeally without a human host, Diablo, in the spirit of the Dark Wanderer, created Leah with the human Adria as an ideal vessel for the Prime Evils. Raised by Deckard Cain, Leah grew up to aid Nephalem in his fight against Azmodan, who was trying to steal the Black Soulstone, a device used to trap demons. This journey would culminate in Diablo 3's Mount Arreat, where Nephalem, Adira, Leah, and the fallen angel Tyrael would confront and defeat Azmodan and trap his spirit in the Black Soul Stone along with the other six lesser evils.
But Adria, who had been a double agent for Diablo throughout Diablo 3s story, betrayed the group and sacrificed Leah to summon Diablo, who was now infused with the essences of Azmodan and his kin. Despite becoming the most powerful being in existence, Diablo was defeated by the Nephalem, and his spirit returned to the black soul stone, still imbued with the lesser evil souls. Eventually, the Black Soul Stone was destroyed, and the Lesser Evils broke away from Diablo.
