Destiny 2's Shadow and Order update has reportedly been delayed

Unfortunately for Destiny 2 fans, the upcoming Shadow and Order major update appears to be hit with a delay, moving out of the way of Bungie's upcoming game, Marathon. While the beginning of Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy seemingly got off on the wrong foot with all the changes added to Edge of Fate, Star Wars-inspired Renegades expansion has been a hit with players, bringing a much-needed boost to the game.

Renegades added a great mix of Star Wars to Destiny 2two things that went together much better than the fans probably though. While the content doesn't use any Star Wars-specific names or locations, fans can clearly see big inspirations in the game, with the new Tharsis Outpost social hub representing a Tatooine cantina. Many weapons, such as the Uncivil Discourse, A499 Heavy Sniper Rifle and The Heirloom all take cues from classic Star Wars weapons used by Han Solo, Din Djarin and Chewbacca respectively. Not only that, Destiny 2 fans can finally earn the Praxic Blade, Bungie's version of the iconic Lightsaber. But for those looking for new content to search for, the wait seems to be even longer.

Destiny 2's first major update of 2026 continues to make improvements to a controversial feature

Bungie is releasing its first major update of 2026 for Destiny 2, fixing a variety of issues while continuing to improve one feature.

Destiny 2 Shadow and Order reportedly delayed

For Destiny 2 fans, it looks like the wait for the next big update is going to be a little longer than expected. Although Bungie previously revealed one Destiny 2 roadmap for its Year of Prophecy roadmap last year, which indicated that the Shadow and Order update would launch on March 2, 2026, things have changed a bit. While Bungie has yet to officially comment on the updated change, the report from Forbes writer Paul Tassi, who has heard from his sources that Destiny 2The March update is being moved, but details on how long or when it will be officially announced are currently unknown.

While details are still very thin on Shadow and Order, it represents a similar mid-season update Destiny 2s previous Ash and Iron release during The Edge of Fate. Unfortunately, Ash and Iron wasn't the slam dunk fans were hoping for, leaving fans in a state of continued frustration with the state of the game. Even if Destiny 2Player numbers have not recovered to pre-Edge of Fate levels, the Renegades expansion has been well received by players bringing many of the new gameplay elements such as Praxic Blade, the Lawless Frontier activity, as well as core mechanic changes such as the Vanguard Alerts system, which recreates popular activities such as weekly night drops and rewards.

The reason for the delay isn't hard to figure out, as Bungie confirmed it Marathon finally has an official release date, with the upcoming extraction game launching on March 5th. Of course, Bungie isn't too fond of two of its games competing for attention, so to give Marathon some respite and a chance to catch all the limelight, it seems to be moving Destiny 2 aside for now. That said, Bungie is also preparing some crossover content, also announcing special cosmetics like the “Waiting for Exfil” emote, the Modern MIDA Multi-tool exotic weapon skin, and the Silkworm Weave Shader.

After a concerning 2025, which included an underwhelming testing period and controversy stemming from allegations of plagiarism ang. Marathons art, the game has seemingly turned around after its delay and rediscovery by Bungie. In pursuit of a fresh start, it seems Bungie has taken much of the criticism and feedback to heart, implementing common features such as a solo queue, proximity chat, and a variety of maps that each feature dynamic weather, better lighting, and improved visuals. With things seemingly moving in a much more positive direction, the early March release date could indicate a higher level of confidence in the title. Also with ARC Raiders still dominates the genre, it will be interesting to see how Marathon can fit in.
