Dark and Underrated Fallout Companion Backstories

The world of Fall-out game is one of the darkest Bethesda has ever created. There is death, suffering, loss and longing for a time that was lost to the belligerence of a few people. It's all painted against the backdrop of greedy corporations that refuse to be constrained in their quest for scientific excellence, namely the horrific Vault-Tec experiments and the questionable actions carried out by major factions like the Institute. As a result, the post-war wasteland is gruesome and unforgiving, and that brutality is also reflected in many of the companions players encounter during their adventures.

Fallout 4: All Romances, Ranked

Fallout 4 is one of those games that has something for everyone. And the small includes several different romantic paths.

While most of us are familiar with the names and stories of companions who have the most tragic stories of all in Fall-outfrom Fawkes to Cait and Boone, we're not talking about the worst of the worst today. There are some companions that kind of fly under the radar, either because they aren't as popular or as talked about as the rest, but they still have incredibly dark backstories that are worth highlighting. These are the ones you might not even remember suffering quite a lot before the player character came into their lives.

Curie

Witnessed the slow withering of Human Life

Starting with everyone's favorite robot doctor from Fallout 4Curie. A resident of the hidden area of Vault 81, her job, along with her long-dead human colleagues, was to develop a cure for mole rat disease. The plan was to use the Vault's inhabitants as guinea pigs in the name of science, but the Overseer, suspicious of Vault-Tec's greedy and unethical plans, decided to work against them by sabotaging their work. This led to the scientists slowly dying one by one while Curie watched hopelessly from her side. Despite this, she still ended up developing the cure as planned, and when the sole survivor eventually finds her, she has spent the last few decades just “scanning the walls”.

Regardless of what you think of the Vault 81 experiment and how motivated the Overseer may have been in their actions, you have to admit that what Curie had to go through is pretty grueling. She's obviously a synth, but there's something incredibly sad about how optimistic and naive she is as a companion despite what she went through. It's hard not to feel sorry for her, not to mention imagine how powerless she must have felt, unable to save her human colleagues.

Porter Gage

The Raided Becomes The Raider

Countless characters in Fall-out the universe endure loss and pain at the hands of attackers. Some of them choose revenge, others simply move on. Porter Gage from Fallout 4however, has a rather unique path. Gage's life was unremarkable when he used to be a settler, and he remembers his parents bending over backwards to accommodate the local raiders. He eventually grew tired of this and decided he was better off on his own, rather than being a victim for the rest of his life. He ran away and after working here and there landed a spot in a gang and became a striker himself. Basically, he became what he had despised, the very thing he had seen his parents endure. What could be darker than that?

Fallout 4 6 Overwhelmed buildings that are a lot of fun

Fallout 4: 8 overwhelmed buildings that are a lot of fun

Putting together a focused character build in Fallout 4 can generate some very underwhelming results, something these builds excel at.

Gage's time in the gang was not easy, however. He was betrayed by his leader, who had likely begun to feel threatened by Gage's wits and ingenuity, believing that he would eventually steal his place as top dog. After the betrayal, he went from gang to gang before landing in Colter's group in Nuka-World, where Sole Survivor also ends up. Although his story is not tearful, you would think that as a settler who has suffered for many years at the hands of raiders, you would choose a path that would not turn you into that very thing. It's a very ironic story, one that makes you think about what his parents might have thought of him if they saw him now.

3

Lily

A grandmother's life became hellish

The Master is known as one of the most despicable characters in the Fall-out universe for its desire to create a supreme human race with the FEV, and through its super mutant powers, Unity and Lily Bowen exemplify this ultimate cruelty. Formerly a resident of Vault 17, where she had lived a rather idyllic life as a grandmother to two grandchildren, Lily was taken by the Master's forces on a fateful raid and turned into a Nightkin with FEV. Transformed into her new form, she was nothing more than a military pawn to the Master and his Unit, forced to kill. Fortunately, after the events of Fallout, she was able to leave Unity and can be found in Jacobstown in Fallout: New Vegas when the courier arrives.

However, her time in Unity has left its mark on her, just as it does on any soldier. Lily suffers from schizophrenia, which developed over time when she was forced to use Stealth Boy during her time serving the Master's whims. It manifests as a dark, evil voice that encourages her to do bad things. Unfortunately, the cure for this condition isn't much better either, as Lily risks losing her grandchildren's dear and close memories. It's absolutely disgusting and sad to see how much she's lost after the Master's actions, and it's upsetting enough to hope we can go back to the first Fall-out and destroys the abomination again and again. Justice for our sweet grandmother.

Lenny, Myron and K-9

Fallout 2 was indeed, Really Dark

The early one Fall-out game had “no chill” when it came to dark stories, which is why I'm going to do a triple-whammy by introducing three companions from the other game that personally made quite an impression on me with their backstories.

Let's start with Lenny. When the war eventually came, he took up residence in Vault 12, which on the surface seemed like the perfect haven. But as we all know, Vault-Tec is not to be trusted. This particular Vault's dark quirk was that it was intended to conduct research into the effects of radiation, and to do so the Vault doors were never fully closed. Lenny was turned into a ghoul, a fate he could never have predicted even in his wildest dreams. Imagine that: trusting that everything will be fine, only for your body to reach this bizarre state of near-immortal decay.

10 Best Stories From Bethesda Games, Ranked

As a developer and publisher, Bethesda has left its mark on the gaming industry by creating deep, immersive stories for players to get lost in.

Next we have Myron. Myron's story is dark not because he suffered much or had a hard time, but because of the implication he and his background had for the rest of the wasteland. Myron is actually the genius behind Jet, an iconic chemical like any other Fall-out fans will know. As part of the Mordinos, he conducted a ton of research to create what we now know as Jet, the cost of which was countless slaves used as test subjects. Fortunately, he meets an end befitting one of his kind: at the hands of a violent Jet addict.

Finally there is K-9. This dog is not your ordinary dog meat, with the ability to speak and the intelligence of a human. He is actually a cyber dog, and this extra layer of intelligence is what led to his tragic backstory. When K-9 had had enough of seeing his superior, Dr. Schreber, carrying out his morally dubious research, he bit the man. His punishment? He could no longer use his legs. Unable to move, he was condemned to watch Schreber continue his evil ways until the player arrives.

Clover

A slave who never questions

Clover doesn't get much love Fallout 3mainly because to get her in the first place you have to pass an Evil Karma speech check to literally buy her. You see, Clover is a slave, and she is controlled by the infamously horrible Eulogy Jones who resides in Paradise Falls. Personally, I don't like going for evil playthroughs because I have a hard time sticking to my evil ways, but what's cool about Clover is that once you buy her for whatever amount of caps you manage to negotiate, she doesn't really care how your Karma moves.

You'd think saving her from Eulogy would be good, which is probably true given the physical and verbal abuse she's endured at his hands. But Clover is mentally gone for a long time. She has no self-esteem and will blindly follow whoever happens to be her owner at the time. She never questions this absolute loyalty, not under Eulogy, and not even under the rule of the Lone Wanderer. She has gone through a harrowing life as a slave and a woman, and the worst part is that she doesn't even seem to realize this at all, given all the brainwashing she has suffered over the years, but especially during Eulogy. She doesn't even feel compassion or feel a sense of camaraderie with Crimson, who is in the exact same situation as her. I can't think of anything more horrible than a fate like hers.
