Crimson Desert lets you get a dog with armor

Crimson Desert players have embraced an unexpectedly small launch discovery: the ability to outfit dogs in armor. The feature has received notable attention on social media since the game's debut, helping to shape the early buzz around Crimson Desert.

The second match from Black Desert Online developer Pearl Abyss, Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure set on the war-torn continent of Pywel. Originally intended as a Black Desert Online prequel, it was eventually reworked into a standalone experience with its own unique lore. Crimson Desert was officially released on March 19th, debuting on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. One of the features that the developer managed to keep secret until the last moment is a pet system. The functionality was first confirmed by Pearl Abyss Americas director of marketing and PR Will Powers in an early March 2026 interview with Brazilian YouTuber Patife.

Crimson Desert Review: A Remarkable Open World That Often Asks Too Much

Crimson Desert offers one of the most impressive worlds in gaming, but the deeper you go, the more it begs you to face it on its own terms.

Crimson Desert Early Adopters are overjoyed with armored dogs

The extent of the system was not widely understood at the time, which is underscored by the fact that fans are only now realizing Crimson Deserts dogs and other pets can be equipped with equipment, including custom armor. The discovery has been making waves online in recent days, with at least a hundred early adopters taking to social media to share their delight at learning they can have an armored dog accompany them on their adventure across Pywel.

In the 24 hours since its launch, a certain Reddit thread started by user Antique_Heron4450 has done a lot of the heavy lifting to raise awareness of dogs with armor as a thing in Crimson Desert. “Ok insta buy,” one person wrote in response to the post, while another added, “no review needed. 11/10.” Reddit user Matt_37 offered a more direct endorsement, writing: “I'm not kidding, your post sealed my purchase decision.”

Crimson Desert Dog Armor is purely cosmetic

Pet armors and other portable equipment are sold in stores everywhere Crimson Deserts vast open world. They are purely cosmetic items that do not affect gameplay, largely because pets themselves are not combatants. Their main practical advantage is the ability to loot enemy corpses and destructible items, a task they perform diligently, often while combat is still going on. In addition to dressing, Crimson Desert Animals can be fed, petted and even carried, provided they are no bigger than a pig. Most of these interactions can be used, directly or indirectly, to raise an animal's Trust meter, an important part of the game's taming mechanics. When the meter is maxed, the protagonist automatically adopts the animal.

The breadth of these interactions reflects what early reviewers have identified as one of the game's greatest strengths: a highly immersive open world that is more than just set-up and that actively encourages exploration and experimentation. Initial fan reactions seem to largely match the title's early reviews. For example, while pet armor has amused many players, the current buzz surrounding the feature has also positioned it as a wider showcase of the game's offerings. Some recent social media discussions thus portray the addition as evidence of the enormous attention to detail that went into its creation Crimson Deserts large open world.

The instant popularity of Crimson Deserts pet system didn't stop early adopters from asking Pearl Abyss to further expand the feature. For example, a vocal subset of fans suggests that the South Korean developer add an ability to name pets. Meanwhile, others have expressed a desire to see more pet clothing for both dogs and cats. Cat friends in Crimson Desert may wear boots and a hat in an obvious nod to Charles Perrault's evergreen fairy tale Kiss Bootsbut early impressions suggest that their miniature armor plate selection is small, with only one matching outfit currently known to exist.
